Does a student needs a laptop/computer this summer?

OK, from the "weirdest question of all" category comes this winner from me:

Do most kids bring a laptop computer to CMU precollege? If so, what do they need the computers for?

My D has a very old (5+ years) laptop that we were required to buy for her at her old school. She doesn't use it often, as it is very slow and has not been serviced for a long time. Plus, it has not been fixed so that it can pick up a wireless connection, though I suppose it would be easy enough to get that done.

Is there a real academic component to the CMU summer program in the sense of writing papers, doing online research, or does most of it involve reading plays, etc.?

Hi Lisa,
My D did not take a laptop with her, but her room mate had one for the occasional email. I think they had access to computer labs for any work they needed to do. the main thing I remember was putting their resume together, but I'll ask my D.
About parents weekend... I went and I am glad I did, but I'll report more on that later.

My D (and her roomie) each brought their own laptops....mainly to keep up with the outside world (it was nice to know the whereabouts of a then 16 yr. old and to be able to forward whatever needed...for instance her resume, music etc.). They were given CMU e-mail addresses as well. Yes, they did have a computer lab (& printers) at the dorm. They read books, but don't recall writing papers per se.
Re "parents weekend"......we visited, which was basically family time for us (worth it). ;-) Btw.......IMPORTANT.......if you do bring a laptop, bring a computer LOCK to attach to the desk..(if you forget, they sell them at the bookstore.)

Thanks, Harriet and Mainstage. Maybe we should consider having D's laptop updated/serviced and letting her bring it. Hmmmm ... one more of a gazillion things to do before the end of June!

I didnt bring a laptop. I was going to initially and decided last minute that I didnt want to risk it getting broken. The computer labs are probably better than your lap top simply because the computers are pretty new (maybe about 2 years old). They are Mac computers, which I wasnt use to, but you pick up on them quick. Generally, you could get to a computer 80% of the time, as long as you made sure you didnt go during really busy times. Also, its the only air conditioned room in the building (I think) so it was a pretty hot spot to hang out, if you catch my drift. The only thing to keep in mind is if your D has an Ipod, u need to have a way to charge it. I would have died without my Ipod, so I bought an Ipod alarm clock that played my music out loud, charged it, and woke me up in the morning.

Hey all of you wonderful mt people!! I have a question for all of you cmu pre-college kids and parents...do any of you know how their music program is? I know....it is cmu....and it should be stupendous!!! My younger d...the flutist...just got her acceptance into the pre-college program. (yeah!) But she has a couple of other acceptances to choose from and the web site does not give a great amount of info on their program. She knows she cannot go wrong with cmu, but just wonders how others felt or if any of you have heard anything. So, if any of you can give some advise, we would greatly appreciate it. We know that cmu is becoming one of the most sought after flute programs in the nation for college, that is what drew her....and, well we know how it is for mt. I will post on the music thread, but this is so much more active. By the way, my older d is a mt major, so that is why I am still here on this mt thread!!
Thanks in advance for the advice!!!!

notfromme, sorry that no one has answered you -- yet! My guess is someone who knows something may answer once the week is underway. I would recommend going to the "summer programs" thread that is more general and found on the main CC forums page. Or, check to see if there are any threads about this under the general CMU thread on CC.

Sorry if this has been asked already-
How many people get into the voice program? I sent mine the first week of April (I procrastinated a little too much) and am waiting to hear from them still. Is it very competitive?

Not sure how many they take for voice, but it is my understanding it is extremely competitve for music. You can call them to check on your standings. They are very eager to help and will tell you where you are in the process. My d applied around the same time as you and recieved her acceptance package this past week. (but she is instrumental, not voice) I did call earlier...about a week earlier, and they told me she was accepted. Best wishes to you!
