CMU priority Waitlist class of 2016 Email

alexcusalexcus Posts: 10Registered User New Member
edited April 2013 in Carnegie Mellon University
I got an email yesterday from CMU admissions stating that they recieved my priority waitlist form, and that they will be calling on May 7th between 5pm-9m to notify me of my admissions decision.
Does everyone on the priority waitlist get this email and phone call on the 7th?
From reading previous years threads on this subject, it seems it could absolutely be a rejection or an admittance so I am trying to not get my hopes up.
Does anyone else have any further insight on this?
(I am on list for MCS)

I am also on the priority waitlist for ECE (CIT) but I didn't get any such email. However as I'm an international student, they will probably email me instead of calling. And everyone gets their priority wait list decision on 7th, so it doesn't mean anything. They can't predict your chances of getting in until 1st May.

I'm also priority waitlisted for MCS and have received the email. By chance do you know how many of us are there? Or how many students they accept from the list each year? I'd appreciate any information you can give me. Did you apply for math too?

You can call them and ask how many are there but I don't think they work today. As for the list, last year they didn't take anyone (they over enrolled) and previous years, while they still over enrolled (but not to the extent of last year), they took on average 50 kids from the waitlist. I don't know if that is all from the priority waiting list but I would assume so.

thanks, gibson for the info. I am wondering about all johntheos questions too.
I am only on the waitlist for MCS, hoping to major in bio. Fingers crossed that the CMU's waitlists have some movement this year.

Yeah from what people have told me about CMU's intentions and from the people I've seen waitlisted I'd like to think there will be good movement so here's to hopin'; only a few weeks left.

I emailed them last night asking for statistics and for the number of priority wailisted students. I don't expect an answer until Monday but I'll let you know as soon as I get one. Good luck!!!

thanks john and gibson. Good luck to you both.
john, I will be interested in hearing anything you find out from that email.
I did hear from a friend that CMU applicants this year were almost 70% female. (?)
I do not know if this is true, but that would also mean that the waitlist
is going to be largely female....that does not bode well for my chances since
    i am a girl haha.

Really? 70%? According to this [http://www.cmu.edu/ira/CDS/pdf/cds_2011_12/c-first-time-first-year-admission.pdf], last year female applicants were 38%. 70 sounds really off lol.
Also waitlist statistics may look kind of grim according to that document. But I second what gibsonlespaul said.

Here's the reply I promised. Nothing new or encouraging in my opinion.

Thanks for your email to the Carnegie Mellon University Office of Admission.

We are still currently receiving last minute waiting list reply forms, and we will not know the exact number of spots available for waitlisted students until May 1 when enrollment deposits for accepted students are due. We do not fill any acceptance slots until that date. Therefore, we don't have the records available for the numbers you request. Additionally, we do not rank students on the waiting list. Therefore, you will never be particularly placed ahead or behind of other students. Instead each college will see how many spots are left and the admission counselors will reevaluate each application based on your original application and any additional material we receive. Your best chances for getting off the waitlist is to just submit supplemental material that demonstrates why you are a good match for our university.

As far as acceptance, it does vary from year to year. Last year, we were unable to admit any waitlisted students. However, in the past we have admitted up to fifty students.

Best regards from Carnegie Mellon's Office of Admission.

JohnTheos: Thanks for posting this information. Why CMU has a wait list at all seems a little odd - and almost cruel. All this means is they will call a couple of people on May 7th and e-mail the hundreds of others who have their hopes up, but have already paid the deposit for enrollment and housing at another school.

thanks John for posting that info even though I also find that very discouraging.

Well when I called them, the lady who picked up the phone said there were hundreds on the *priority* waitlist (and she said it before I even said the word priority waitlist lol its like she was anticipating it).

does anyone know the exact number?
    who's waitlisted for H&SS?
  • JohnTheosJohnTheos Posts: 17Registered User New Member
I asked them for the number so far, but they avoided answering my question. Hundreds though, when last year they took none seems already a bit too many.

I called CMU for my son who got in Business School and is in W.L of ECE. I got the same replies as the previous discussions here. My son does like ECE, thus, he may go to UMich or UIUC.

Anyone can advise me how difficult to transfer from Business to Computer Eng. if he started from Business and minor in CE, and then transfer to CE as major and buiness will be his minor. Is it possilbe?

Any advice from CMU students with the same experience?

    Thanks.
