If i'm pretty much undecided, does it make any sense to apply?

in the application you have to designate which schools you are applying to and why. All i have are interests. I don't know what i want to do and i assume they'd consider me some kind of joke if i applied to more than 2 or 3 of their schools.

You won't be considered a joke. My S applied to 3 different colleges (CIT, MCS & HSS) because he wasn't sure if he wanted to do engineering, math, physics or statistics. He was accepted into all colleges and ended up declaring as ECE/Math double major.

I agree. My son applied to 5 of the colleges and it only helped him, as he got into some but not all. I highly recommend applying to as many as you can as a strategy if you are truly interested in CMU, as some of the colleges are much more difficult to get into than others and they all consider you separately. I would just make sure you can write a paragraph about your interest and make a good case for each one.
