How is the Tepper school of Business, REALLY?

The whole reason I've been wanting to go to Carnegie has been Tepper. I hear about it's powerhouse majors, job placement, and internships. And yet I keep hearing other students make backhanded comments about it. "Computer science is so hard, sometimes I wish I'd applied for Tepper," "Carnegie's really difficult unless you're in some blow-off major like business," "If you want to party, go for the TSoB". Stuff like that. And now they are officially off the top 20 in undergraduates, according to Businessweek. (21, but still...) Should I be worried? Is anyone else a current student or graduate of Tepper? This is really starting to panic me. I want Carnegie to be the school for me, but if all this is true, should I go elsewhere?

I'm afraid it will be too easy. I want it to be strong enough to carry me beyond college.

Disclaimer: DS '06, was not a Tepper student but in CIT.

(unless its been sprayed green.)

Always have a Plans B and C. Odds of being accepted are not good if CMU is your dream school.

I'm currently a tepper sophomore right now, and it's NOT what people say it is.

The business courses and classes we all take may not be as difficult as what CS majors do, but I'd say we tend to overload and do a ton of busy work that makes up for as much time as other kids like in cit, mcs, and other majors are doing. its also mostly tepper kids holding leadership positions around campus probably because it may factor in that we have "more time", and we tend to be the busiest students within a social and academic life...whereas a lot of the other majors tend to be more anti-social.

Stats wise, is tepper harder to get into than other programs?
I know it's only a 13% acceptance rate, but is it also more selective as in gpa, sats?

I think Tepper is supposed to be one of the most difficult business schools out there. That doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be one of the most difficult programs at one of the most rigorous schools in the country.

If you want a hard life consider a double major. You could double in Economics, Mechanical Engineering , Physics, Math, Statistics, etc etc. You could also look into the computational finance program in MCS if you want to be a quant.

? A degree from Tepper will probably carry you beyond college. If this is your concern you could chat with some Tepper Alums...if you get a 3.5+ in tepper you'll probably get more than enough job offers from prestigious institutions and such. Now it is still an undergrad business administration degree ...but it is a good one with a decent amount of mathematics. Many great companies recruit here.

How hard is it to get into the computational finance degree once you're in CMU?
Are there many people applying?

I know this is slightly off topic...
