Why go to Carnegie Mellon?

Just doing research. So why should someone want to go to Carnegie Mellon? What does it offer? How is the campus? How are the academics? How prestigious is the school? How selective is the admissions process?

Campus is great. They call Pittsburgh "the smallest large city." It offers a nice campus setting, but also a city that can be useful for internships and such as opposed to a university in the middle of nowhere. The academics are good, but what is great about CMU is that it gets better every year. I have set ym eyes on CMU for a while and I have noticed pretty much everything gets better each year. Also, if you are one of those people who like to mix arts and technical things together, CMU is the best place to do that.

That sounds a lot like my son. He's a math geek interested in Engineering (or possibly Physics or Math), but he loves his IB classes and music too. I'd love to hear from a non-music-major involved in Jazz Band or other activies for tenor sax and/or piano.

There's the Kiltie Band, which is CMU's version of a marching band. I don't think there are too many actual music majors in it, so it's a very laid back atmosphere (also there's not a whole lot of marching, it's mostly standing in place on the field while playing and then being a pep band in the stands). A few of my friends did it while we were at CMU and they all had a fun time. If they want something a little more serious, I know there's also more traditional concert band which consists of a similar group of people, though it's held during the spring term and they play concerts on random nights in the student union.

And, heck, if he's really into marching band, he could always get tickets to go to Pitt games to see the band play. It's not quite the same, but they're pretty good and Pitt's games are held in Heinz stadium, which is definitely worth a visit if you're going to be in Pittsburgh!

Uh oh... if my son goes to CMU we may need to pack both saxophones (the "beater" for marching band and the good one for concert/jazz bands). Oh well, if we figure out a good fit school I guess we'll figure out all the logistics that go with it.
