I think that's right ... last weekend in March and possibly first weekend in April (maybe two different weekends for those who have scheduling conflicts). I was hoping that would be addressed in the much-awaited scholarship letter. Curmudgeon, do you mean you didn't think there was a scholars weekend or do you mean you don't think there will be additoinal essays, etc?

I didn't think there was a scholarship week-end ever mentioned in D's two interviews , any of the paperwork, or on the website that I have found. If y'all know of something different , please tell as her dance card is a might full. LOL.

I remember speaking with Ned Frazer about it. He called the house one day in November to speak with Splash ... she wasn't here, but we chatted for a while and that was one of the things that came up. I specifically asked because we were thinking of planning a trip during March and I wanted to ensure she wouldn't be missing anything. I'm sure he told me that the scholars weekend was tentatively set for the last weekend in March and the first weekend in April. Please, do NOT take my word for it. I did write it down, but I would never want to give incorrect information to someone.

I was thinking perhaps iamnotabronte might have received the information with her scholarship letter, but if not, perhaps I am totally wrong about the scholars weekend.

Remember, there is a pdf file that you download to tell you scholarship ranges. The scholarship iamnot received is one of those top scholarships. The "scholars weekend" COULD be just a get-together of awardees as opposed to a "competition" like the Hays. (In other words the scholarships have already been awarded .) Almost like an "admitted scholarship students weekend". That's my guess and I'd say I'm 79% sure. Otherwise, unless there are scholarships beyond the range shown in the PDF, what purpose would the week-end have?

I had asked Splashmom the same questions a short time ago, and all I could find on the Centre website was a mention of some scholarships for students who are likely to be leaders and who enhance diversity in some way. Now I can't remember where I found it, but it was not prominent, and I didn't get the impression that these were huge scholarhips. However, maybe they would stack one of those rather than supplant like they usually do. since they must be intended to be an incentive to students they believe will fill a special need. I think they're supposed to be awarded during the Diversity Week or weekend.

Keep in mind that I could be wrong about all of this...

And not to leave her out, Congratulations Iamnotabronte! $15K a year is great!

Folks this is all I see about scholarships that are merit based except for Drama and Music.

Merit Scholarships
Scholarship Level Amount.
Centre Award . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$5,000 per year
Founders Scholarship . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$8,000 per year
Colonel Scholarship . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$12,000 per year
Faculty Scholarship . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$15,000 per year
Dean’s Scholarship . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$18,000 per year
President’s Scholarship . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Full tuition

Diversity and Service Scholarships: The New Horizons
and Bonner Scholarship programs recognize students likely
to provide leadership in the areas of diversity and service
respectively. In addition to a small scholarship, each
award guarantees priority consideration for need-based
grants. Candidates must apply for admission and financial
aid; Bonner applicants must also file a separate scholarship
application. More information is available from the
Office of Admission.

Special programs and outside scholarships: Centre has
special scholarship programs for Governor’s Scholars,
Governor’s School for the Arts students, Centre Fellows,
and National Merit Finalists; check with the Office of
Admission for details. Scholarships sponsored by other
agencies or community groups (including Kentucky
Educational Excellence Scholarships) will typically be
added to your Centre merit scholarship.

I am sure you and doddsdad are correct, curmudgeon. If there is such a weekend, it probably is to have all of the awardees gather.

Hopefully, our kids will receive their letters on Tuesday.

Well, I'm not sure. I have found a note I made listing scholar weekends. All it says is "Centre-last year April 1-2, 8-9". I will google some more.

I do have the note I wrote when speaking with Ned. He told me tentatively the last weekend in March and the first weekend in April would be scholars weekend. I assumed (yes, I know what that makes me), that meant a competitive weekend like Hendrix. Since we can find nothing on a competitive scholarship weekend at Centre, I'm thinking you and doddsdad are correct in that it is a weekend for all awardees to get together ... I guess ... I don't know.

Well, if there isn't a competition we could create one. Hmmmmmm. Longhorn-tipping? Nope . Mine would win. 'shine making? Nope, splash would kill 'em. Goose-stepping? Nope. I think doddsson ought to have that down by now. (Just kidding, doddsdad-would you have preferred I suggested Bavarian Beer Burping? If so insert that instead. I was just going for something "regional")

Moonshine, huh? Believe it or not, we have a bottle (okay, a Mason jar) in the liquor cabinet. We have yet to open it. A friend who knows someone that makes it gave it to us. I'm not brave enough to drink it.

I'm sure we'll find out soon enough. Doddsdad, let us know, please, if y'all get an e-mai tomorrow. My attention has been on the playoff games today, but now that the Colts have lost (Yippee-kay-aye!), I can turn my attention to the more important things again.

BTW, just so everyone understands, Peyton choked ... again!

I hope everyone hears great news tomorrow!

I wish I understood it a bit better, but here is something that Centremom08 told me recently:

"Scholarships do not stack however monies given from Centre do I guess. I think it only applies to outside scholarship money."

Let's hope that is the case! Good job, iamnotabronte, on the scholarship! We'll let you know when our kiddos receive theirs.

Iamnotabronte,
I asked the same question when we visited last spring. They told me the same thing Centremom told Splashmom. Centre does not "stack" their scholarhips. Since your 15K is bigger than the 6K Centre Fellows, it replaces the Centre Fellows scholarship. We were disappointed to find that out, really disappointed...really, really disappointed. What I don't know is whether outside scholarships will take away from the merit scholarships.

Dang it!

I just got home from the grocery store and heard DD chatting and laughing on the phone. When she hung up, she told me it was Ned Frazer. He's such a nice guy and very passionate about his job. He called to see if we were still coming to the Nashville reception this upcoming Sunday and told her she should expect a scholarship letter tomorrow. Had I known it was him, I would have suggested she ask him about the stacking of scholarships and the scholars weekend. We'll see him Sunday, so I'll ask then. If there is anything specific you would like me to ask, just let me know.
