TheVeganActress.
One of few people I actually like on College Confidential.
Good for you.
I'm applying to Centre as well.
It's my safety. I'm a Kentucky resident.

| Good choice
You both will find Centre a wonderful school with many, many opportunities. And ManUtd20Ole, if Centre is your safety, you must be an outstanding student. Good luck in your search!
Feel free to ask questions, my daughter is a junior at Centre this year.

I'm an ordinary applicant.
By the way, I don't have 2400, 36, 4.0, 1% rank, the title of NMF, or 8 leadership positions.

I guess what I mean is that the average ACT for freshmen there is about 28 and about 50% graduated top 10 percent. Yes, you can get a lot of money there but it still costs a lot of money We still fall short after scholarships but what a bargain for such a great education and worth every penny if the school is good match for you!

My daughter sent in her application to Centre last week. She hasn't been able to visit yet, but she met with an admissions rep & talked to him for over an hour. She really likes what she has seen, and she is looking forward to visiting in February (assuming she is accepted EA). There are several schools she is interested in, and it will be April before she makes a final decision.
She is a strong student, tough schedule of classes, great test scores, etc. That's what will get her in ... but it's not what defines her! She is focusing on schools where no one will ask her her SAT/ACT score or brag about the ivies they turned down. She just wants a community of intelligent people where she can have a great time while she learns. Centre seems to fit the bill!

Centre is the place. Because the student body is so strong, academically, no one really focuses on that stuff. It was the first time in her life that my daughter felt like she fit in and wasn't "different" because of her grades and she was, by no means, the smartest kid in class. There are lots of opportunities to do community service and it's strongly encouraged.
J doesn't have a Bonner scholarship but is part of the Bonner Leadership program. It's been a great experience for her and she loves the community work she's been involved with.
She hasn't never regretted or reconsidered her choice (she is, however, looking forward to being a senior |

what's the social life like for students not in sororities and not interested in drinking?
also is the school very cliquey? when I visited I heard from some students that the dining hall especially is cliqueish. has your daughter talked about this at all?

my daughter is not in a sorority. most greek activities are open to everyone so she attends stuff but doesn't buy into the sorority thing. There are many students who don't drink and, in fact, she says she often goes out as the DD for the group or her group will go to the parties and dance (sober). She lives in the Hillside houses and at least one of her roommates (there are 6 of them) is in a sorority so everyone just really intermingles.
She doesn't say much about the dining hall except that it's a necessary evil. There have been groups that she's eaten with on a regular basis and then ditched for one reason or another. Generally you will find that folks will eat with their roommates or other freshman in the beginning but the school is so small that once you get to know people it's much easier.

I think the earliest you hear anything is December 15. Then prelim financial aid packages are back on 1/15.
Good luck!

Okay. Thank you Centremom08. I'm asking because a friend of mine applied, and he's going crazy with the waiting (I think he EA'd in October), although he won't admit it. It's funny how the college admissions process affects behavior.
I think he's worried about being a little liberal and from the Northwest. His other friends and I told him it wouldn't be a problem, but I guess he needs something to worry about.
I'll pass along the luck. |
