Chapman breaks ground on new Performance Hall--LA Times

More Chapman in the news: ground has been broken on the arts and performance center, as we all saw this week on move-in day. The article notes that they are using the acoustician that helped design the wondrous Disney Hall. Funded by private donors; expected opening: 2015.

Hmm... I kind of like weird juxtapositions, though. I think we should live and let live, paint the entire arts center that hideous peptobismal pink, and call it something like Chapman Center for the Arts and Drafts. Have they though of a name for the place yet, or does it depend as usual on who donates the most $? Perhaps we could form an Arts and Drafts Foundation to raise $ for the project. (One day, they will make a classy ticket booth out of that liquor store, I bet.)

WOW! The Chapman's Center for the Arts will be "the crown jewel for the campus!" That's quite amazing!!!

<<<A groundbreaking ceremony for the 83,000-square-foot, privately financed facility is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the site, just south of Glassell Street and Walnut Avenue.

"This will be the crown jewel for the campus," said Jim Doti, Chapman's president. "It is mainly for student usages, such as (for) our College of Performing Arts, theater and symphonic performances."

The three-story center will rise 55 feet from the ground. In keeping with historic Old Towne Orange's restrictions, nearly half of the building will be beneath the ground.

"It's a unique feature, but burying the building will help sound-wise," said William Hall, dean of the Center for the Arts. "It will keep out car noise and noise from the street, because the earth acts as a natural barrier."

Hall said considerations were taken for patron enjoyment, making sure every sightline is unobstructed and that the sound would be pure.

"Every floor will have four women's bathrooms to one men's bathroom," he said.

The center will host community events as well.>>>

This is my favorite part:

"Every floor will have four women's bathrooms to one men's bathroom," he said.

As usual, Chapman is thinking ahead! (or, a head, for you nautical people...)

Muscos principal contributors lend their name to the structure

"President James L. Doti thanked the Muscos and told a wonderful story of their background and work in the Orange County area. He also thanked the many other donors who made the center possible. However the day was not really about donors but the beauty of the campus and wonders of the arts."

“Not only will the Musco bring great music [to Chapman and Orange County], but it will be training the future generations that will make it possible to continue to bring great music to the lives, hearts and minds right here in Orange County,” Doti said.

Hoove's Liquor Re: The pink liquor store

"Hoove's Liquor at Glassell Street and Walnut Avenue will be the only building left standing after the demolition is completed. The owner turned down Chapman's offers to buy the corner property so the university has designed the center to essentially wrap-around the corner store.

Ron Makhlouf, a co-manager at the store, said he isn't concerned about the project's impact on parking along Glassell because 70 percent of his business is customers who walk in from the university or neighborhood. If anything, he thinks the shows at the center might boost his business."

If Chapman really wanted the property, it would be no trouble to run the liquor store out for selling to minors, as Pinky's is notoriously lax about carding students. I'm guessing that having most of the block is enough for them.
