I don't think you can contest it right away. It might depend on your reason for wanting to change assignments. If you're trying to switch because you're in a triple, it might not be possible because there probably aren't any open rooms or people living in a double/triple room by themselves. But during the year, once you move in and once school starts, you can try to move. Usually after a month or two there are more openings and options for you to move. It's a very long process though and usually takes about a month before you can move into your new housing. They try very hard to talk you out of it because it means more work for the housing office. But if you really want a double, you should do this. You can request a room change online on the housing website. You might be able to get a really good deal if you try moving. Sometimes spots in the apartments will open up meaning that it's cheaper for a double in an apartment (than a triple in a dorm room). Additionally, it is even cheaper if you cancel your meal plan. You just need to be persistent.

Last year, it was mid-July when the freshman received their dorm assignments and roommates. You can request roommates if you have made friends, btw.

Last year my son received an email on July 22nd with his housing info...it listed his dorm and room number, his roommates and their contact phone numbers....he was given a specific time to checkin to the dorm and info on where we could park (for 1 hour only) to unload his stuff....he was also given his mailbox number and what his official mailing address was...I would assume the timing will be the same for this summer....
