computers

for film prod majors: what are most of you doing about having a laptop/desktop? We saw all those computer labs at Dodge; do the students actually use the editing software, sitting at those labs, or are their personal computers loaded for bear in their dorm rooms? Curious because I would like to avoid additional expenses, if most students use the Dodge stations, and get him the recommended Dell 3500 or whatever if that's the students' preferred option.

I don't get this: I've heard that the teachers recommended Macbooks or Macbook Pros, and then that info packet they sent out recommended the Dell. Also I was under the impression that Macs can run Avid too...

Macs can run Avid and the Chapman discount is amazing -- a $2000 product for $200. However, there may be some minor differences and incomptibilities in file formats etc.
Whatever you get, be sure to load up on external drives. Those film files are incredibly big.

KIAD: Is that Avid a $2000 product for $200?!? Or is it the Mac which is discounted? (You can tell I'm clueless parent type). What's the link to see the Chapman discount? Thanks in advance!

It's the Avid software for the Mac! (Most Mac users work with Final Cut Studio products.) As for Macs, themselves, Apple may offer a (hefty) student discount to Chapman students as they do to students at many (if not all) other colleges and universities.

S says that the computers for editing at Dodge College are terrible and slow. He prefers to edit in his room. He has a desktop pc and a macbook. This is not necessary by any means, but he used his own money for one and the other was a gift, so that was his call. I believe that he put AVID on the pc. He did also need to pick up an external hard drive.
