This College Deserves a Thread

My second son is considering CNU. The school is one of the most dynamic we've seen, and we've been "looking" for five years (when you include my older two kids). SAT scores have been shooting up. Construction has been extensive, and continues. The dorms (er, "residence halls" officially) are mostly quite new. CNU strike me as a real happenin' place.

Drawbacks? This portion of Virginia, known as "the penninsula" has pockets of poverty--both urban and rural. Interspersed with these, however, are some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the state. Williamsburg is becoming a retirement mecca, and is, of course, the home of William and Mary--the nation's second oldest college.

CNU, until 1977, was a satellite campus of William and Mary. It is a good, solid, small liberal arts college. It has in-state tuition, and a great future. I think my S2 wants to go there before it gets "discovered".

We would, of course, appreciate any other opinion before the die is cast.

redbeard,

my son (youngest of 3) is very interested in CNU; has applied for priority admission and is expecting to hear very soon. he's heard good things, likes the small size (relative to other VA state schools) but we have not yet visited. I hear very mixed reports of the location, and that causes me some hesitation. What academic areas do you think CNU is strong in?

Hi guys- I'm a NY parent who is looking at state schools in the mid-atlantic area. We're planning a trip during Feb. break and plan to look at George Mason-ODU-VCU- and CNU. My d is a B+ student and I hope she gets over 1050 (or whatever that translates into on the new SAT). She has no clue what she wants to major in but her school activities have always centered on sports-so she might want a school that has Exercise Science/ Recreation or Physical Therapy in addition to the regular Liberal Arts Majors. If you could give me a little insight into the VA state schools, I'd really appreciate it. I just started a new thread for knowledgable VA and NC parents so if you could post there (or here) it would be much appreciated.
Redbeard- I believe we both gave advice to Noodleman re: Cornell vs. UVA. My older d was rejected from UVA and is now attending Cornell -ILR. She is just completing her first semester and is very happy at Cornell. As I NY parent, I'm happy too as it costs me considerably less to send her to Cornell than to UVA. Hope to hear from you guys soon. Thanks.
