My D11 is also getting ready for coop Jan 2 - she is very excited about it and is looking forward tot he break in her academics. From this point forward, she doesn't have to worry about summer opportunities because she will be working for the next three years from Jan-July on coop...woohoo!

Our S happily reported that he had been to the study abroad office and has been assigned an advisor for his planned study abroad semester next fall. He is also scouting a summer program and some possible internships. Fortunately, there are a lot of intern opportunities in Washington that are fairly close to his school. He also met on his own with his academic dean and reviewed his program for his planned major. The good news according to him is that he has nearly a semester of flexibility due to his AP credits. Now he is thinking about a second minor or a certificate course. For once we are glad to see he is not waiting until the last minute.

He was also excited to announce that he received an invitation to the Susan G Komen Honoring the Promise benefit awards event at the Kennedy Center scheduled for September 28th. Now he gets to spend part of his weekend finding a rental tux for the event which is just a week away.

Have a great weekend everyone!

My daughter started an internship last week. She takes press releases and turns the information into articles and posts them on a website.
She is supposed to work 10 to 12 hours on that, plus 12 hours a week on her work/study job.

Thank goodness her classes are soooo much easier this year. Better classes, better roommates, better job and an exciting internship at a company she would love to get a job with. So far this is shaping up to be light years better than last year.

Avon - can you plz have your DS send my DS some anto-procrastinating pills. Seems like most of the kids are taking steps on their own this year that last year they would have waited on.

Re: check out Group On. They often have deals. Students discounts or maybe a like-size friend has one and he may just need to buy or rent the shirt and tie. Don't forget shoes. Ask around. Email blast.

Not sure what got into him. Perhaps its the impending decision about study abroad next year as he spoke about it alot this summer. It may also be that he has made good friends with several upperclassmen on his Ultimate Frisbee team and has become involved and invited to some functions and programs through them. He is now seeing the bigger picture regarding post graduate employment, grad or professional school, his resume needs, career networking, etc. (Thank Goodness!!!) His school also have a very good career center that they introduce to the students during their freshman year. Its kind of like having great college GC services in HS (which we didn't).

He is also looking and talking to friends about borrowing a tux. He has the shoes and a shirt/tie that he wore to his older sister's wedding and at a couple of HS events. I told him that if he couldn't find one to borrow, check rentals and purchases. If the purchase cost is less than 3 times the rental, buy it. His comment - I am still growing. My comment - Get it a bit large. You are about done growing.

Welcome to fall everyone!

Sophomore is away, I repeat: sophomore is finally away. Fall term begins tomorrow and DH and I are back into empty nest adjustment mode (the dog, however, remains distressed that we didn't bring DS back with us).

Boy, was this move-in much easier than last year, from the perspective of both logistics (this residence hall has an elevator) and emotions (I know how much he likes it there and saw how much he grew from his freshman experience).

CHS2011Mom - I believe you have the honor of the last launch. We are now half way done with fall launches! Two down and two to go. It seems like they just finished applying and deciding where to go. Before you know it we will be talking about upperclass schedules, majors and graduation plans.

Enjoy the last week of September.

D was launched, but she just won't STAY launched. We delivered her to school on Labor Day, but due to illness causing vertigo she came home the same day. Went back 3 days later for the beginning of classes, came home the next weekend. Finally went back the Tuesday of that week, and stayed at school for a whole week and a half. She called on Sunday am miserable with a cold which was her first since she developed asthma last fall. So she asked to come "home"; she could not even heat up chicken soup because most of the brands she knows have soy in them which would cause problems for the soy allergy sufferer roommate. Poor baby. I spent the day heating soup or bringing her popsicles while she napped. I think it was actually the scariness of trying the manage the asthma while she had a respiratory infection which made her want to come home, she just wanted a safety net.

Kilderny- hugs to your d. Asthma can be a scary condition. My d developed asthma her freshman year of high school, she had a few years learning to learn how to manage it before heading off to college. She had bronchitis ( along with the rest of the family ) at the start of school in August which brought on an asthma attack. Thankfully, she took herself to the student health center. She was very impressed with the Doctor she saw. He spent a long time talking with her about her asthma triggers and how to control it. She felt this was the first time anyone really listened to her and explained things to her. I guess in the pediatricians office they talked to me more than her.

Wishing her a speedy recovery!

Aw thanks. D was feeling she made the right decision to come when she called her dr's office this am . When they found out it was the first cold since asthma onset they wanted her to come in to talk about managing it. She will learn the techniques and warning signs for things turning bad, and we will all feel better about it.

DS called last night and is sick - not the usual cold but something stomach related although he was very vague on the phone. Sounded worried though and said he's been going to class "selectively" since Wednesday. I told him to go to health center; he was never sick enough last year (thank goodness!) to go. For this kiddo, physical issues are sometimes a manifestation of stress or other angst so really want him to check in and if all set physically, then talk with someone on the counseling staff. One worry I have is when he is stressed he stops eating and drops 10lbs in a flash - and he's a lightweight to begin with. Told him I'd call tonight to see how the health center visit goes, and he's coming home for Oct break in 3 weeks so can figure out better what's up. Of course, knowing this mom, I am making a mountain out of a molehill and he has the stomach "thing" that's been going around! Parenting from 1800 miles away is still tricky!

Hugs to Kinderny and Siemom and hope your sick kids get better soon. It's so hard to have them sick and not be able to help out. Kinder--enjoy the chicken soup moments!

We finally got to talk to DS on Sunday. We sort of forced a call due to DS2 finishing his Eagle Scout project---so we told DS he needed to call and congratulate him! I think DS is stressing out about classes a little bit. He's also worrying already about medical school acceptances. While I'm glad he's thinking about his future, I still want him to enjoy the here and now more!

DS2 had a great Eagle Project and it went so well for him. We are very proud that he was able to find and execute the project on a very short time frame. He painted curbs yellow in the parking lot of the local American Legion. They wanted it done before a conference they were having in October. Glad it's done!

Is anyone planning on attending parent weekend this year? At DS's school it is called Freshman Parent weekend, so although there really isn't any reason for us to attend on that specific weekend, we have friends who have a freshman and would like to spend some time with them. Not sure it will work out with our crazy schedules.

On a BIL update--he got out of the hospital yesterday!!! It's been two weeks since the surgery. I'm so glad he seems to be doing well. Now we have to figure out schedules to take care of him. I've been encouraging DH to start an email thread with everyone involved, but he hasn't done it. So I asked him this morning if he wanted me to do it. Someone needs to do it soon. Ahhh families--aren't they fun to deal with.

VAMom2015 - Congrats to your Eagle Scout! And so glad to BIL is making good progress.
Siemom and Kinderny - Sorry about the sick kids, but it sounds like you/they are doing what you can to take care of it. Hope they are both better soon!

D is settling into her second year nicely. She had an initial scare the first weekend when she said she had so much homework she was already feeling totally swamped and overwhelmed - not something she usually feels. Things seem to have tapered off somewhat, so although it is definitely going to be a more challenging year (no more introductory classes!) she feels back in control. She has actually met with a couple of her professors outside of class, something she said she hadn't done before but with her more challenging courseload, she wanted to be extra careful about making sure she is keeping up. She is very pleased that they are so accessible - one of the nice things about her school. She's trying out some new activities too, which makes me happy!

Hope everyone's week goes smoothly and that all our kiddos are feeling more settled and confident.

VAMom2015-There is a free website called "Lots of helping hands" which is very useful for coordinating after hospital care. Good wishes to all the helpers and your BIL. Also great work and timing for your Eagle Scout!

Sorry to hear about sick kids but it is a bit better earlier in the semester. So from now all on all college students please stay well until exams are over!

Agree with cooker wishing everyone a smooth week.
