Yeah! IJustDrive. I love the "found her people"
I believe StO health insurance is opt in with proof of independent coverage required. I was reading up on their on-campus health services last night which seem pretty comprehensive. All regular exams etc. are free in addition to "yearlies". In these days of limited coverage for certain groups it's reassuring to have it spelled out in black and white that their services are comprehensive. I still need to get D an appt. for final trip to her pediatrician who visited her at birth in the hospital - full circle for her 18th birthday in June and going away. We need meningitis vaccine as well as tetanus booster etc. DH finally has such good insurance with kids on his plan that I feel almost tempted to become a crazy health care consumer :-)
MizzBee - hopefully there will be no PDA at the concert. DS collected money from bandmates today as he volunteered me to purchase ticket for them. I guess it's a sign of confidence and trust since I did so well by him with other tickets. I took DS to see Rush when he was in 3rd grade and he still talks about it as having been a formative experience . . . bringing 'em up right.
5boys and PNWMomof2 - I'm interested to hear how your UPS visits go, so do report back after you get back from the bar if you are, indeed, meeting for drinks. And, contrary to giterdone's admonition that your DS will be living in a broom closet if he doesn't get in the housing queue, StO hasn't even opened their housing link yet. And, straight from the woman in charge, won't start working on assignments until June. No pressure, though. :P
Mom2M: I'm sorry to hear about MIL problems. That is the story of our lives right now and it seems to be one brush fire after another. It's all consuming at times and hard when trying to manage things remotely. Good thought and good luck.

downtoearth: regarding UVa's "facilities" - perhaps your D is referring to the most revered and prestigious student housing available at UVa, which is for fourth-year students only, by application. This is the lawn. They are the 54 small single rooms that line both sides of the grass area ("lawn") on either side of the rotunda toward Cabell Hall. They have a sink, but no indoor toilet. Students in these rooms can be spotted early in the morning in their bathrobes en route to the bathrooms, which are inside. But students must travel outside to reach them.
For first-year students (not called freshmen) a couple of the choices are the same as when I was a student: new dorms (Alderman Road) or old dorms (McCormick Road). New dorms are suite style; old are halls with one large bathroom on each floor accessible from the hall on either side.
My older friends who attended before me urged me to select the old dorms, because 1) they are closer to classes and 2) they felt you met more people in the hall-style dorms, and if you didn't care for someone, it was easier not to be around them, since there wasn't a living room space in common.
There are more options available now for first-years. And if your D isn't interested in being one of the few fourth year students selected to live on the lawn and have to go outside to use the bathroom, she certainly doesn't have to apply!

My DS didn't realize until he moved here that simple concerts would be a big deal. His best friend in jr high was the son of a pivotal member of the HYPHEE novement of rap, or that the peeople that he spent X-Mas diner with had one grammies.
We lived a very different life in CA, and have yet to get our grooove here in the Midwest.

BTW... just popping in on the insurance debate.
I, too, have another at UCLA.
We both opted in and out.
In the end, we kept both the UCLA plan and our own plan.
My older D needed the flexibilty of going to the student health facility when needed. Before she had her tonsils out this December, strep was a regular event. In her program (actor moms, take note) she had to have a doctor's note for every absence. (Like high school... no joke). Going to Ronnie Reagan Med Ctr. did not always work. Having the flexibility of both plans was the best. Luckily, we could afford it. And I think I am going to do the same with baby D.

About insurance - couldn't you have the same problem in reverse if you take the school's insurance policy? I believe schools are only in session 30 weeks a year - 15 each semester. That leaves 22 weeks at home or elsewhere without coverage. Our insurance is so vastly superior to anything they could offer at college, plus we have amazing medical facilities in the dc/baltimore area, and a critical doctor of his - the neurologist. And one child on the policy makes it a "family" plan so removing him won't change our price. Considering I'm in the biz you'd think I'd know how this stuff works - looks like I'll have to go check this out!

Creekland, as far as down-sizing, KOA camp inpector is a real job, so you can get paid to camp across the country. That is our dream retirement job.
| You just made my morning! Thanks!
Our guys have been kept with our health care... I just kind of go with the flow on that.
Another testing day at school... gotta go make my lunch. Pending whether I'm actually testing or watching study hall kids, I might be on later browsing around.

Congrats, chrissy, on Berkeley decision.
Adding another confusion on Health Insurance; Some schools accept your own insurance at their health facilities. You don't need to buy their plan to use their facility. If you have a good plan that doesn't cost more to keep your student and your school is decent and accepts it, no brainer.

Hi Everyone, I am ready (I think) to join this lovely group. This is my second and last trip down college road, so I will be dealing with some empty nest feelings as well. My S will be attending NYU in the fall.
shout out to chemusic: My D attends Vassar and is very happy there.
shout out to seiclan: Both H and I are Emory alumni and LOVED it (although this was in the age of the dinosaurs ).
Looking forward to reading all the college adventures (hoping for the best, preparing for who-knows-what)!

You're welcome!
About insurance, we have horrible, expensive, this-is-what's-wrong-with-our-country individual health insurance, so we'll be putting S2 on the university coverage along with S1.
eyemamom- you'll have to pay the mandatory health fee ($500 this year) whether you keep your own coverage or not, just FYI. The optional (make sure you opt out!) is through Aetna and is a decent policy with nationwide providers. It covers Aug 1 - July 31.

So, on the way to school this morning my youngest (the one with the recent head injury and two semi-seizures) non-nonchalantly told me he heard voices (twice) in his head last night as he was getting ready for bed. He tried to explain it and I tried not to show my fear (?). We have his family doctor appt tomorrow morning at 8am. Unfortunately, I don't expect answers there, but just referrals to a neuro specialist.
I don't suppose anyone here can ease my mind in the meantime, but I thought I'd put it out there, just in case. This is a field I know nothing about. Youngest is an Aspie, but a highly gifted and functional one to where many wouldn't guess it. His grandfather on my side is both bi-polar and paranoid (never any voices and not an aspie). Then there's the whole recent injury thingy.
My mind is racing.
On a good note, we got notice last night that middle son (my URoc kiddo) won a regional essay competition. He'd won the local (couple counties) competition the past 3 years, including this one. This time he also won the region. I was so happy celebrating with him - now I'm so fearful wondering what in the world is happening to youngest. He's not the type to say much to anyone about health issues, so his mentioning it to me likely means he's scared too (maybe, I'm not sure how much aspies can fear vs how much is just factual - like Spock on Star Trek - usually it's the latter with him, but this is different I think).
Gotta go - kids are arriving.

Good morning all! Was unpleasantly surprised this morning by an email from the Rochester student host coordinator (at 7:40 last night), letting DS know he needed to be on campus by 6 pm (there had been no time previously noted - actually, they didn't get in touch until 48 hours ago anyhow). So, we're leaving a few hours earlier than planned - glad my job is flexible, and glad we weren't flying him there!
I have my suspicions he has already made his mind up and just wanted a fun trip. :-)
Edited to say: creekland, that does sound scary, and I hope you have answers soon. Aspie DS deals with anxiety issues, apparently common on the spectrum, so fears seem entirely reasonable.
