What better college supplement than videos of reporters talking about you!

5boys - 1000 miles! That's amazing, what a neat kid!
S made dinner for the first time last night. He was so proud of himself, it was very cute. I told him the mashed potatoes went back to hubby's grandmother and he was now obligated to carry on the tradition and pass it down to his own children.
We also renewed his passport yesterday and got him a passport card. He can take the car and drive over the canadian (or mexican) border with it. How did I not know that existed? That way we can just keep his passport at home. And it just hits you, this is the first passport that will last 10 years. He'll be 28 when he renews again! Do you know how much life you live in those 10 years???
Creek - I will be praying for that girl. We know it isn't her fault, but I hope she doesn't carry that guilt the rest of her life. I would hate this accident derail her life as well.

Very neat on potatoes, eyemamom! Our saying is that they "taste just how they're supposed to" for recipes like that.
Great to hear and update, 5boys!

Wow on the 1000 miles!!!! So neat and what a life changing experience!
I never even looked to see if the housing deposit was deducted from the bill - must look into that!

5boys - Throw in some reaches with full FA and send them videos as suggested by mizzbee. The grades, scores etc wont matter because now he is a celebrity.

5boys--Congrats to your S on the 1000 mile mark! That is incredible.
Just checked S's bill and yes, housing deposit was taken off the fall (only $250 so not a ton, but still nice not to have to pay it now!).

I like what texaspg said. During the long miles ahead before the next interviews, he might give some thought to how he would want to appear to any "dream college." I know that's not the purpose of his trip but he could maximize the media exposure to further his other personal goals, including college.
It's okay to do a little crafting of his message and try to control his own "brand." He can't help how any articles or interviews are edited but he can still try to come up with some unique interview answers that would most likely be used and not edited out.
I'm sure plenty of interviews ask what he's learned about himself, what he plans to do next, and for him to relate any interesting stories from his trip. Of course, they'll also ask the big WHY question and hopefully he's already saying something other than, "because it was there!"
I'm so glad he's enjoying this awesome adventure and I know he's making lifetime memories!

Yes.. he would have A LOT to say other than, "because it was there". Just reading his blog captures all that he has gained from this experience. He said he has never met so many brilliant and interesting people in his life. I am hoping that since Orpah's new book club book is "WILD",about a woman hiking the PCT, he will get on her show..LOL!!

Creekland, I am so sorry for the loss of this special young man. How difficult it must be for you all. I will pray for all of you, particularly your son. I'm really sorry.
5boys, what a wonderful, wonderful story! Your son is simply amazing!
Question if anyone is around this morning:
My son and a friend are driving on a two week road trip and they have been offered places to stay all around the country as they travel on a limited budget. I feel that they should express their thanks in a tangible way. Any ideas? I was thinking of some small keepsake from our town or even from MIT, but if there are other ideas (a simple thank-you card might be ok?), I would love to hear them.
Thanks!

Creekland- I am sorry to hear about the loss of this special young man. So very sad.
5boys - AWESOME!!
sbjdorlo - I think something small from your area is a great idea. Nothing huge, but something from your area of the country. Some things that come to mind: honey, jam, maple syrup or other speciality food from your part of the woods. Something consumable is always good!
So DS recieved 18 credits from his AP scores. I thought that was great, until I saw that some students are getting 30 to 40 credits! What is the point of going to college and developing a major if you took half your classes in HS??!! I am big into not rushing thorugh your life, so I am going to crawl back into my shell and be happy with the 18 credits!

5boys -- I was thinking of "Wild" as I was reading the posts. Awesome.
SBJ, I've hosted a lot of college kids who were friends of my kids. Sometimes my own kids weren't even here as I hosted kids they knew who were traveling through the US. A small gift like maple syrup or whatever is fine. I've had kids (over 21 though) bring me a bottle of wine. What I have most appreciated though have been the kids who left my house the way it looked when they arrived, who cleaned my kitchen when I stepped out and who were thoughtful enough to restock things like milk. And thank you notes. We hosted a friend of DS2 for a few weeks this summer when he transitioned from graduation and he left us a really thoughtful note yesterday.

Thank-you for the ideas, geogirl and mim. We're in San Diego, so I was thinking maybe a calendar or something reflecting the beauty of our city. I love the idea of cleaning up and of course, thank-yous will be sent. My cousin volunteered to pay for a night in a hotel in a town where there wasn't much in the way of camping and no hosts. I'll think of something special for her.

When we toured Case Western in March, we left D's older brother at my aunt's house nearby. While on the campus tour, we saw a dorm window with a Texas flag in it. D thought it was pretty funny and took a photo to show her brother. After he joined the Navy, her brother got very "pro Texas" and started leaning a bit toward "Texas is better." It's usually just in a joking way.
Apparently that little photo incident at Case stuck with her. Last night, she told me she wants to take a Texas flag to college and hang it in her dorm window. I'm sure her roommate from another state would really appreciate that.
