tozubri - just wanted to say I looked at our bill from P*mn* and there was no mention of the $500 deposit we paid. I then read on the site, and like yours it turns out they will refund all or some of that when D graduates or permanently leaves the school if no charges are outstanding. They call it a fee deposit. I don't recall what details we got when we paid it, but I had assumed it would be credited to some bill. Considering how expensive everything is, this is a minor issue - but you're not the only one who has a school with this policy, at Pomona isn't known for nickle and diming.

Perhaps some other schools collect annual deposits at registration. The only other fee we are paying at registration is for activities I think. It was pretty minimal.

On the deposit issue, my under grad held it until you left. But in the spring of your senior year, there was a concerted effort to get folks to sign over the check as part of the "senior gift". I was part of the team that convinced 97% of the graduating seniors to give sign over their deposits.

sbjdorlo -- When I visit faraway friends, I bring California-grown dates. Some of the ethnic markets in our area sell nicely-wrapped gift packs.

Woody35,
My Dallas-native DH brought a Texas flag to college in Eastern PA and displayed it all four years in his dorm room (though not in the window). Don't remember seeing any flags from other states, though. Clearly it's one of those Texas things.

bubmom - it's really funny to me since we don't even OWN a Texas flag! (I'm a southern California transplant here) Her brother will be so proud. LOL Her roomie may be annoyed.

I don't know yet if there are any rules there about stuff like that hanging in their dorm windows. Her dorm room will have three windows so maybe the roommate will forgive her. It's possible it would be mostly hidden by curtains from the inside and just visible from the outside. If nothing else, she'll probably go ahead and hang it in the room and yes, display it all 4 years, even during her study abroad!

This is apparently the beginning of how those Texans-away-from-home get so 'Texified.'

Page 2? This thread was actually on page 2 when I got on this morning... gotta change that! I was beginning to think I hadn't clicked "Parent's Forum."

Or you could blame my actions on the fact that it's almost 80 degrees out at 6am in the morning... in a land where it should be in the 60's. And I have to go out and do chores...

My D has had her Texas flag for months ready to bring and hang on her dorm wall!!!! I hung mine on my dorm wall in boarding school in Connecticut too - it's fun to be from Texas!

DS has actually talked about getting a CA flag, but I keep telling him he has turned into a Hoosier and it wouldn't fool anyone!

D2 bought a Mexican soccer jersey to wear on campus.

D2 applied to few on campus this week, she has a phone interview today. I told her if she didn't have a job on campus I would cease her allowance. She is very motivated. D1 told her that now is the time to apply before other freshmen arrive on campus.

Where is everybody today?

I know those of us in the Midwest are NOT outside enjoying the weather - yuk. Big beautiful storm clouds keep rolling by, laughing and not dropping a single drop on my scorched, crunchy lawn.

oldfort - I think we're opposites on allowance. i don't give any period, and then it's up to my kids whether or not they want to go earn some money! Speaking of which, my 15 year old son has a dogsitting job coming up. This is for neighbors who we overheard had bed bugs (heard the inspector guy coming out of the house talking into his phone), but hadn't ever seen any work trucks looking like treatment was happening. So I had the unpleasant task yesterday of going over asking asking, "so...yeah...we overheard that you have bed bugs and wondered if you'd had a chance to get the treatment done yet. We aren't comfortable having S come over three times a day if you haven't had a chance to treat yet." Ugh. Might have been the most uncomfortable conversation I've ever had. Probably not, but at least the freshest i my mind!

Was in Indianapolis over the weekend. It was an interesting experience going from 80 in Houston to 97F in midwest. They still have firecracker ban posters up here and there which we had in Texas and I also heard about a lawn watering ban which we had last year too.

Yes - he said they'd had the treatment, although they had the CO2 treatment, which I've read is not as effective as the heat treatment, but still - they've had it treated and reinspected, so I think we're OK. S is still going to stay on the tile floor and not sit anywhere.

texas - you hit the nail on the head. It's been in the mid to upper 90's most of the summer here. And no rain. Why were you in Indy?

It's exactly the same at our house PinotNoir. Now I can reassure my kids that there are other mean moms out there!

He has a very small allowance and has told that he is required to work in college (to help with books and for spending money).
