I bought twin XL sheets for D who did a summer program at Brown. She's back, now S gets them for college in August. I took him to BBB the other day where he selected a really nice pillow.

That's it, he's done.

I will pick up a bathroom caddy and send his mattress topper and a rug with him, and a couple of towels. He doesn't want to hear about anything else but books and school supplies.

This is a boy thing, right?

I loved the 4th child humor too.

We're another no-TV family. We do have a set and historically used it to watch DVDs, also (more recently) streaming video, but we've never had aerial/cable/satellite hooked up during D's lifetime. She thinks of broadcast TV as a vacation treat and is kinda hoping that her roomie won't bring a TV.

^^ no TV here for almost 2 years. Not that we're out of the cultural loop, we have Netflix and internet, but no cable/broadcast. Don't miss it at all. and no TV will be going to college.

In election years especially, not having to watch political ads makes me REALLY happy.

We are a tv family, though everything is on the DVT/TiVo. Seriously, how can you guys not watch the Daily Show?

Once we get the shampoo/conditioner/razors, we are done. Is anyone taking a trunk? Considering that DS will be most likely moving to another fraternity during his first week, we are trying to figure out how to make the move painless.
I can also imagine that it could be used for storage later, but DS has a habit of forgetting what is in a drawer, truck, etc

MizzBee, my DH is a big fan of the Daily Show. We watch it online.

Last edited by weatherga; 07-22-2012 at 03:12 PM. Reason: After years of being truly no-TV, we're not really no-TV any more. It's just that we only watch what's available on the net.

I guess I just hate watching on the computer-smaller screen, set up doesn't allow us to watch together. Also, I think there are a few shows not readily available on the computer that I like to discover. I missed the last episode of Person of Interest and can't find it online. Killing me.

Psychomamma, I'm passing on your Ds reasoning to mine who is a bit concerned that her roommate/suitemates have not responded to emails. I was thinking maybe they were using a different email/don't answer strange emails ... hadn't considered wanting to have a lot more to talk about from the get go.

My guy isn't going with a TV - never even thought about it. We have one here, but only watch things like the news or shows we have on the DVR. We're Colbert people... but we tape it to watch the next day.

He's also disappointed that his new roomie hasn't answered e-mail or phone messages, and if his e-mail is correct, leads to a different name on FB - one that is totally protected. He hasn't answered a friend request there either. Unfortunately, yesterday my guy confided that he's no longer really looking forward to going. He IS still going (just not looking forward to it like he was), but his ties with Emmanuel were strong and this new guy appears to want nothing to do with him (sigh). Hopefully there will be some nice friendly guys on his hall. I told him he doesn't have to be friends with his roomie - they just have to co-exist for a semester (or year). He can have his best friendships elsewhere and choose to live with them next year.

Creekland - The new roomie has also had a change if not an upheaval in plans. He may be a last minute student, or one who did not get housing in the first round, or one who was in a triple and had already communicated with those roommates or just out of town/country. I would advise your son to try not to let his disappointment and hurt over Emmanuel color his year with the new roommate. Many of my D's friend are out of town or even out of the country right now as it is that last big vacation with family. There are many reasons why the now roomie wouldn't have answered yet.

p.s. There is a thread from a young woman who is upset that her roomie who was assigned on Monday hadn't responded to email by Friday. She was asking if it was too soon to think about requesting a new roomate. I think that the possibility of instant communication has set up the expectation if instant communication. Remember, most of us just showed up and got who we got on the first day sight unseen. This hyper communication thing is new.

Agree with saintfan. It's easy to anxiously read too much into slowness to respond to that initial roommate communication. Creekland's S is still grieving and it's very natural for him to compare the new roomie to Emmanuel, but should really try, as much as he can, to give this new guy a fair chance as a roommate, whether or not he turns out to have friend potential.

So sorry that Creekland's S is feeling a bit numb about heading off to UR. Hope his joy in living creeps back as soon as is right for him!
