NM - D and I ate at Toloache on 50th betw 8th and Broadway http://m.yelp.com/biz/toloache-new-york-2 before going to a show. Great real Mexican - guacamole and margaritas are excellent, the churros and chocolate dessert is divine, and the service is attentive and friendly. DH and I have been back and I've sent some foodie friends there. Not sure about the veggie optiins, but if you like Mexican check out the menu.

There is a pleasant Turkish restaurant called Dervish on 146 W. 47th St. (bet. 6th & 7th Aves.) which has great service and good prices and decent food (a $22 pre-theater dinner, I think). Molyvos remains good. There's the China Grill (60 W 53rd).

We ate last week at an excellent and expensive restaurant called Lincoln in the Lincoln Center Plaza, so 15+ blocks from the theater.

In terrible news, a young man was killed yesterday while painting an oil tank. One of the interns was only a couple of miles away at the time of the blast, so he and his mentor were on the scene almost immediately to help, which was very traumatizing for that student. The twenty-something year old who died worked for a different company, but was well-known by everybody. S2 says they will have a safety briefing today to talk through what went wrong. Very scary since the interns are painting tanks on and off over the summer and already had that incident on S2's first day on the job.

S2 gave me some details that indicates that their process is safer, so that is something, but it is a dangerous job. Ironically, S1 is the one who routinely seeks out dangerous situations, while S2 is Mr. Cautious but is the one who ends up in the hospital periodically from fluke accidents. I'm fatalistic on this type of stuff. It could just as easily be a car accident so I don't try to put them in bubble wrap, but S2 clearly needs emotional support right now.

S2 is very good friends with the intern who was on site so that student is talking to S2 to help him process what he saw, which is almost as bad as S2 living it himself. I think that student may need to call it a summer and also get some professional counseling. I will talk to S2 after work today and see how he is doing. The whole crew is going to be in bad shape emotionally and who knows how the other interns are reacting. It was still too fresh when we talked last night.

How terrible! I read about the fire here:1 dead in Bolivar well explosion - New Philadelphia, OH - The Times-Reporter
This occurred in a small town nearby where H and I lived for 13 years when we first got married. We still have many friends in the Dover/New Philadelphia area. I didn't know your S2 was in the area. Hoping your S is doing ok.

NM, S2 is living in Dover this summer and traveling from well site to well site. This was right in his immediate area.

TA...we lived in Dover! If he should ever need anything we have very close friends there who could help him. In fact, H and I are traveling there to stay with friends in October. H worked at the local hospital.

TA -- how horrible. I hope your son (and the others) have access to some counselors. We all know life is risky, but in my mind this is much, much different than a car accident. Are you ok? This is a time when it must be particularly difficult to have your S. away from home.

NM, it's a really small world. I am always nervous about disclosing too much information so probably hadn't mentioned his exact location before.

Really a small world! We are going back in Oct for the big football rivalry between Dover and New Philly. I bet your S2 would love the football around there.

NM, he loves everything about the area. He plays pick-up basketball in the park after work every day, has been to the nearby football hall of fame, likes to see the cows and horses in the fields and so forth. I think he said there are even Amish in the area. He describes it as idyllic as he has never been a big city type.

I do want to talk to S2 again when he gets off work today to see how everybody is doing. Maybe they won't have any of them paint any more this summer, but it's not just painting. They do lots of different tasks at each well site. The well that exploded was on the other intern's route that day for some other duty and it could just as easily been on S2's route. If the accident had happened just a little later in the day, the intern and his co-worker would have been there and been killed. The other employee who had just left to check on another well was spared. If there had been a spark, the explosion on S2's first day of work would have killed all three interns. This incident is a reminder of the edge they all walk every day with this type of work. It's not really within their control because there are lots of people doing different tasks and anything that goes wrong has the potential to take other lives depending on who is in the vicinity.

I wonder if this incident will make him re-evalute the cost-benefit of this career choice. I will encourage him to do whatever he feels comfortable doing even if that means coming home and cutting the internship short to just give himself time to think. He wasn't thinking along those lines yesterday but I know with this type of event there can be a delayed stress reaction and S2 does not like stress.

We lived in a neighborhood adjacent to the park. Spent many days playing in the park with D1 and watching H play softball there. There are lots of Amish in the area. There is a beautiful little town nearby called Sugarcreek and a cute winery called Breitenbach. We really enjoyed the 13 years that we lived there. Keeping S2 in my thoughts and prayers.
