CBBBlinker. Outlander fan, too. When Odessagirl and I were in Scotland this spring, we went to many places around Inverness that were mentioned in the book. Starting with Culloden. I booked a private tour and the guide asked us how we knew so much about the war. Then I, somewhat sheepishly, told him that we read the books. Well, what an adventure from then on.

Just popping in to say good morning. Love the Olympics but hate NBC's prime time coverage....so much time, so few minutes of sports.
Went shopping for Son...he keeps gaining weight, so he had nothing to wear to neice's wedding (next weekend). We were able to outfit him with dress slacks, a dress shirt and sport coat for $43, thanks to TJ Maxx, the 60% off rack at Kohls and a thrift store.

The greatest boon to the local area - quite rural in whole - was the addition of a tjmaxx and a Michaels craft store in the last year. The TJMaxx isn't nearly as nice as the one I go to in Msp, but it's nice to have. Not sure how some get to be so much better than others, but it's still nice to have the option.
I think I have come to find out why my picnic table may have been so inexpensive and although I like it there are two problems - one is that while I was all about the dimensions, I failed to mention height, so the table is a bit on the high side and two (and actually the bigger bummer) is that it might have been made of pressure treated wood, which will have to sit for sometime before I can paint it. Does anyone know how I might know when the time is right? I want to paint it white, it's on a covered porch so not exposed to the elements. Truth is, I really don't know how one tells. My google search referred me to some sort of moisture content gauge thing, but that doesn't seem like something you just pick up (Home Depot lists them for 300+ dollars!). Any advice?

Hi Moda - H said to let it sit for at least 6 months and to stain not paint.
Speaking of Michaels and crafty projects, D is going into high gear this month. After 2 years of bed bunk living, she will finally have her own room again in a rambling old Victorian. She is sewing pillows, stapling headboards, recovering her brother's IKEA couch and generally going crazy with her new-found independence.
S is leaving for Beijing on Thursday. He'll come home for D's graduation - for a weekend - but then won't be back until Fall 2013. Ugh

If it sits six months, it's sitting nearly a year, which will have to be fine. But it's a slight bummer. Still want it white to match my wicker. I might have to recommission in something that's paintable. I guess I didn't get the memo, because I had clearly said I was going to paint it. Ahh the Amish. It was still a great deal and at least now I know he builds a great table, it's just a matter of the right wood.
Went to Church this morning..and if I am really honest, here is the only place I go to Church. Sermon went a little long, but I did take away a little nugget or two which is good. My family is town and Im hosting a little cocktail party tomorrow night. So.. who's got an out of this world, extremely easy hors d'oeuvre I could impress them with?

Hi Moda! I did a "food on a stick" theme one time. Grilled chicken satay with peanut sauce on skewer, grilled shrimp with a tequila lime marinade on skewers, chilled cheese tortellini with cherry tomato, black olives on skewers and then drizzle Italian or EVOO with chopped fresh basil over them. Dessert was cake pops! You can get a round ball of styrofoam and place in a flower pot and then poke the cake pops in for a nice display.

Moda, ShawWife cuts fresh figs in half, puts on some chevre, and pours on a bit of balsamic vinegar. Easy, fabulous, and a little messy.

All I can say is next time NM has a party, I want to be there.
Good weekend here in Virginia. Drove to NoVA Saturday for a belated birthday celebration for D. Took the metro in, visited the Natural History Museum briefly (along with everyone else in D.C. it seems), had a delightful lunch, a stroll around an air-conditioned mall, and then headed home. The restaurant we ate at, Founding Farmers, was wonderful. I am so glad we made a reservation! D was delighted to enjoy a lunchtime cocktail with her parents. It was a late lunch so more dinner than lunch, but it was a great time and good food. She really seems like a native up there now.
Friday she received instructions on the next steps for permanent employment and she wants to move forward with that process. Quick turnaround it seems; they wanted a preliminary app and updated resume by close of business today, so D completed that yesterday. What is interesting is that other companies have been contacting her by virtue of her linkedin profile; she plans to attend an invite-only event at the end of the month. So we'll see how this all develops. I am hoping this means she'll have lots of options. I think she's acquired some valuable skills over the summer.

The whole concept of the restaurant is quite interesting. Evidently it is owned by a collective of farmers and the emphasis is on healthy eating and sustainability. D and H shared a plate of stuffed dates while I enjoyed some gazpacho; H had a skirt steak and enchilada combo that was quite good; D had a burger and I had shrimp and grits. Of course we had a cocktail and dessert too. Not for the dieter but it was a celebration! Definitely something for everyone but everything was so good! It's a neat space but on a weekend there was not much else happening close by. DTE, the green tomatoes looked appealing but I am the only one who would have eaten them, I fear. Needless to say, we'll be back.

Exciting news in the sabaray family! Keeping my fingers crossed for D! The restaurant sounds wonderful! Yum!
Wonder how Moda's cocktail party was/is going?!?!?
A little under the weather today so late checking in. D2 is a bear tonight as she prepares to take her GMAT tomorrow. May head up to bed to read for a bit.
