You're welcome. BTW, if you haven't taken a look at Ross (university of Michigan) you might want to post your question in the umich thread. Ross has a good track record and is well-regarded in Europe. One of the moderators there, Alexander, has a lot of insight about IB and international recruiting, as does Bearcats. He's into quant, has graduated now, and I believe working in IB...but he may also tell you to aim for Wharton |

Hello all my CC friends. Just an update for those of you wondering how #TS is doing. He turned 21 yesterday and I think he has finally become comfortable with himself. He started DigiPen this fall and seems to have found his niche. He even calls home, just to chat, and can't seem to contain himself when speaking of his happiness at school. He even invited his Dad over to see his apartment. And according to H, told him how he gets up each morning eager to go to class. He says he identifies and relates to his advisor and his CS professor, finds the classes stimulating (no more falling asleep in class - of course the surgery curing his sleep apnea helped there). He works late with his "team" each day and did not come home for his birthday weekend because he had a late class Friday and had plans to work all weekend in preparation for his first mid-term. I raised my eyebrows but H, who is as big a skeptic as I, said he feels the kid has finally come into his own. I am encouraged. We plan to visit on parents weekend, next weekend and take him out to a belated B-day dinner and his first legal drink (unless some friends took him out last night) SO some good news for a change. Hope everyone here is doing well and getting excited about your 13ers graduations. For mine, he is very happy to be starting over and looking at a '16 or '17 graduation date, and I am happy for him.

#theorymom -- So great to hear from you and especially great to hear good news of #TS's successes. That's just wonderful!
Where are you now in your program? I can't remember how long it was to last. Has it been all that you hoped for?
Do come back and keep us posted!

#TM, fabulous to hear the good news. As I always say, Life is not a race. It is good to hear that #TS has rebooted in an environment that really works for him. Good that he had the sleep apnea surgery.
Had a nice cycling trip in Vermont with ShawWife. Got home and started digging out from the two days of only responding to urgent emails.
ShawSon came home to work but spent all night talking with GF -- apparently an argument. So, no work got done. They haven't broken up yet, and she's supposed to come this weekend, so who knows. I went to a party tonight of a professor friend of mine. His undergraduate advisor, it turns out, wrote the seminal paper on which ShawSon's thesis is based and was at the party, so I asked. He's happy to talk with ShawSon and gave me advice to pass on both about research and about career goals (he thinks somebody as gifted as ShawSon should be a professor and help start businesses on the side as he did and play cards on the side as he does). He didn't suggest it, but he might even have job leads for ShawSon. I've known this guy since I was a grad student, and was sure that all ShawSon had to do was say he was my son and was doing related research and he would have an open door, but now the door is really open.
ShawD didn't realize she had Monday and Tuesday off, so she and ShawWife went off to a museum opening for a friend -- about a 2.5 hour drive, I'd guess -- and then to an ashram for a day or two of recharging yoga.

#theorymom, thanks for the update! Nice to hear he is enjoying his studies, and happy birthday to him!
shawbridge, a cycling trip in Vermont sounds lovely. Sorry about ShawSon's gf drama. Nice connection at the party! Hope ShawD and your wife enjoy their time together!
Talked to S on Friday night. He's mainly texted since he started school; I think the last phone call I received was in August. Finally realized part of the reason is related to one of his texts about dropping his phone (he's due to get a new one later this month). Phone doesn't do phone calls very well now, apparently. S is in Boston for fall break and was talking to us on D's phone.
He's getting along very well with roommate. I shouldn't stereotype, but when I saw his RM was a top recruit in the school's biggest sport, from a private boarding school where he played his sport, the images that came to mind were "spoiled" and "entitled" and "drinking." I didn't even meet RM at move-in; schedule was crazy that day and while we saw evidence of RM stuff in the room, we were never in the room at the same moment. So it was nice to hear they get along great, are both very laid back. S said that several people seem to be having roommate complaints so he feels very lucky.
I now possess a plane ticket to Boston for November! We have never flown D home for Thanksgiving because the flights are too expensive, and had already told S the same. But earlier in the month S will be in Boston with his school choir to perform. The flights are still reasonable, I will get to see both of them, and it's also S's birthday. H has a work conflict and can't go, so it will be just me. Looking forward to it!

Hey #TM!! Happy B-day to S! Sounds like he is in a wonderful spot in his life.
cq - great that you get to see them both...I don't know if I could have gone a month without speaking to woodyS during his first month away!

Thanks for the positive vibes and well wishes everyone. Shaw, sounds like things have fallen into place nicely for Shawson (other than the GF issues).
Speaking of biking, I have been biking a lot, trying to get back to some semblance of fitness. That and kayaking.
My program (MFA in creative writing, thanks for asking Z) is 2/3 complete. I wrote my essay this semester and though I stressed about it, having not been in academia for 40 years and having been an art student to boot, my advisor was very positive about it and insists I should try to publish it. Not sure about that idea, but we'll see. My final semester begins in January and I graduate in June. So I will be the 13er in my family! LOL I will enjoy all your loved-ones' successes and graduations vicariously.

It's a 3 day weekend for younger D and last night we caught a glimpse of the old, relaxed D we used to know. We all sat down and watched The Princess Bride (25th anniv. in case you didn't know.)

Back from a trip to Maine to visit D (week before parents weekend). D and H ran a 1/2 marathon and then H and I went off for a week in New Hampshire. Great time. Colors were great this year. Did some hiking and biking. Not as much as we may have as it rained some but still managed to get some in.
Trying to quickly catch up on 10 days worth of posts but I'm sure that may not happen. Work is quite busy now.

We had the rain in Vermont also, RM, but it was peak season for leaves, I think.
I'm outside London in a Manor House that was converted into a hotel -- looks like a great place to have a wedding. But ... I stayed here because it was near an office of my client where we had a meeting and the team we are working with was going to take us out to a fancy dinner tonight (the hotel has a fancy-ish restaurant with lots of gothic windows/oak). Well, the two top execs are sick and canceled dinner. So, instead of getting together with someone in London, I'm stuck in a wedding venue. Ah well. I actually predicted they were going to cancel. Should have stayed in London, where I have meetings with a client and prospective client, before heading on to Stockholm.
