ahsmuoh - I haven't been following the thread today until now, so sorry this is a little late. Kids from S'13s HS go to UNC-CH as OOS students every year. Seems to be pretty popular. According to Naviance, the average unweighted GPA of the accepted kids over the 3 years between 2009 and 2011 (wonder when 2012 will be added??) was a 3.89 and the average SAT score was a 1336 out of 1600 or a 2014 out of 2400. The applied, admitted, enrolled was as follows:

Class Apply Admit Enroll
2011 34 11 6
2010 7 6 2
2009 13 7 3

Hope that helps.

Driver's ed is required in KS to get a license, DD has finished the classroom portion and had her first day of driving with the instructor today. My husband has been driving with her since she got her permit last December. He is a much better teacher than I am. I am glad that DD waited until she was really ready to get her permit. She is so much more mature than a year ago.

DD's last day of school was May 21st. She finished the year strong, all A's! Yay! GPA is sitting at 3.42UW/3.49W. She definitely had a much better year, and with her honors and AP courses next year she hopes to get it higher. She spent the last two weeks preparing for the ACT test that was last Saturday. Her first score was a 29, and she is hoping for a 30, but I hope whatever it is that this is the last test. She felt pretty good about it, so we'll see.

Now that the June ACT is behind her we are focusing on visits. We will try to finally get to some schools this summer on the way to/from vacation in SC. Band camp starts the first week of August, then senior year! The 2013 parents are already starting to plan the grad party!

I am concerned that DD's list is top heavy. She is in love with Smith on paper, and at this point it is THE school. But, she still wants to see Oberlin, Carleton, Macalester, and Grinnell. She know that she is in the bottom 25% on these schools, and that they are reaches. I don't want her not to see them, but I am not sure where we should draw a line with visits.

On a positive note, DD has been fencing for a few months and loves it. I had no doubt that she would love a sport where she can go at her opponent with a sharp weapon

Re UNC-CH: our Naviance reports an accepted weighted GPA of 4.61 and SAT of 1442 out of 1600 or 2194 of 2400. Here is the applied/admitted/enrolled graph by year:

2011 11 1 0
2010 9 0 0
2009 12 3 0
2008 8 1 1
2007 3 0 0
2006 10 3 0

ACT - Our local high school has about a dozen kids with perfect ACT. It was on the news so talk about pressure.

Good morning!

Reeinaz, thanks for the tips, I'll try reading back to her and see if that helps.

Midwestmom, congrats to your DD on finishing the year strong!
Goodluck with the driving. DS waited as well and it was the right choice for him, if not a pain in the neck!
For schools, given the schools she likes, has she considered Earlham, Beloit, Sarah Lawrence and Bard? SL & Bard are pricey and can be all over the place with FA, but worth a look I think.

asmuoh, I'd check Naviance for kids from my school, but it's worthless now - practically every school is blocked now.

Reg: UNC: CH- S's school navience data shows none was admitted to UNC CH in teh past five years. I see a lot of applications. But Students with scores as much as 2300+ and top 10% of the class has been rejected, deffered not even waitlisted. Surpirsed to see this. Their admission history to other equally selective schools are way better than this. I wonder why. UNC was not in our list yet.

Apollo: Wishing your D will regain her confidence and will be able to focus on her strength. She has great grades and what you have written in this forum suggests to me that she is a great person as well. Keeping you in my thoughts.

My S's last day of school today as a junior. Now waiting for his report card. Here is hoping that he maintained his grades he had till 3rd quarter. Yesterday we had the sports banquet at his shcool. Thanks to you guys for explaining to me what letter awards are couple of months back. He got one yesterday. I wouldn't have a clue what that is if we hadn't discussed about it here couple of weeks back. His coach had some nice words to say about him as he present the letter award and the pin. He has been working hard on this team and loved being in the team this year. So nice to see him getting the recongintion.

Thanks all for the UNC info. My dd's naviance is similiar to Donivrian - high stats and high GPA's and NO acceptances!! My dd's stats are higher than the "acceptances" from MomofNe's naviance and dadotwoboys but it seems like maybe UNC likes certain high schools? My dd goes to a very well respected, selective academically Catholic school in Ohio so usually they get bonus points but not sure why the pattern at UNC. She has not been in contact with any admissions people (we did do an official tour last summer). How does a kid do this ? She would be like other kids - I know she would have a problem "finding her voice". What would the first correspondence sound like? I have no idea how to advise her????

Thought I'd give you another Naviance data point for UNC-CH. Out of 24 applications on the scattergram I'm seeing three admissions + one wait-list that turned into an admission. Avg GPA was 4.09. Avg SAT was 1490.

Not having a chance to read history regarding UNC-CH posts, if you are OOS admissions is capped at 18% which makes it very competitive.

ahsmuoh: I am also surprised to see this. Am really curiouse to know why.I know that it is a great school and very competitive, but some thing doesn't make sense here. Also, I am fearing some thing like that will happen at caltech too. I see in navience a number of students apply to caltech and get admitted and never one student from S's school enrolled there in last five years. So I am fearing that in future, caltech may not take applications from S's school seriously.

Well, y'all made me curious about at UNC-CH. At ds's school the avg GPA is 4.35 (out of a 4.8 max). The avg SAT is 1485/1600 and 2212/2400. In the past three years, there have been 13 acceptances, 2 WL and eight denies.

For the schools with high UNC-CH admits, what type and programs is the school you are from?

Public - ranked in bottom 25% of our state, IB program (we are part of the magnet at this school, the rest of the school is considered very low 80-90% free lunch). IB is ranked high but as overall school very low.

Ok, I checked ours too for another "sample". My D wants to apply as well, and we said she can but I don't think she stands a prayer. Great grades, but gee- her extra-curriculars are largely based around soccer. That should stand out, don't you think? : ) That said, its been her dream since she discovered soccer as a little kid, and a reach is worth a shot. Anyway, from our Fairfax County, VA school: avg GPA 4.31, SAT 1440/ 2115, ACT 31. 2 of 8 accepted in the past few years, none attended. I'm surprised more have not applied, actually... Our Naviance is up for another week I think, so if anyone wants other schools' snapshots let me know.

I have heard that if your school has a history of being accepted but going that colleges stop taking your high school serious. One of my friends daughter applied to Notre Dame this year and she was worried because 5 girls had been accepted the year before and no one went! This doesn't seem to be the issue with UNC-CH because for some reason we don't get any acceptances (only 2 or 3 apply every year - out of a class of about 175). Will definitely be a lottery school for DD - she probably has a better chance of getting into Duke!
