STEM - I bought the Bauld book and decided to read it first. I'm almost finished so S will start reading it next week.

S is very much into the college search and that makes things nice around here. I just need to complete the spreadsheet. Hoping we have everything wrapped up before school starts back.

FYI: the 25th anniversary edition of the Bauld book is coming out on August 7th. I just pre ordered it. I know it would be asking too much for D to look at that in the next month anyway, what with vacation, a week long volunteer gig & the 2 week writing program.

MyLB--He isn't restricting himself but we are lucky that there are several in our area that have a program so that helps. It's just easier if they have a program. We have a couple friends that are actuaries and they have offered assistance for testing, etc. if he ends up in a school without a program (or one that does). He is a strong math student and we think its a great field for him intellectually as well as socially.. He met with the head of the actuary department at one school he is considering and got even more excited about the program after that so I think it will be something he will stick with in college. Math is very easy for him, which will help.

drmom123: "On Writing the College Application Essay" by Harry Bauld, a former Ivy League admissions officer. The book is very well written, entertaining, and full of great advice.

Great to hear good things about other schools. SLU - always well regarded and not just regionally. Great for health careers. I'd also add Creighton.

RobD, thanks for the heads up on the Bauld book. I think I may have a copy of the old one around somewhere - given to DS by one of my friends, but I don't think DS ever even looked at it...

2 more exams to go! DD is pretty fried. We spent the afternoon at the beach with her cousin and uncle - she definitely needed to recharge and wave diving was a good way to do it!

MDMom: I am a SLU grad, but did grad work there, not undergrad. Really liked the university and the city. Wanted to stay after graduation but it didn't work out for me.

For us it's a family school....my grandfather played on the basketball team and got a law degree from there when it was just a BA! Class of '24. My parents went there, as did an uncle and a cousin. Another cousin has taught in their nursing school.

My oldest didn't have the grades and didn't want to leave our state. My dd13 wants a big SEC school but I am hoping youngest ds will consider SLU! (HS class of '1)

DD got class schedule for next year. Once again she didn't get AP Psych due to a scheduling conflict. We are going to drop her history electives since she is already taking Econ and AP Government and she will take an online course. We are planning to use BYU. Has anyone used them?

I was actually pretty impressed. I emailed her counselor and she has gotten back to me twice in a couple of days and it's summer break! Turns out she is a proctor for BYU and will proctor dd taking the exams.

So she will have one free period technically but will work on her online class in the learning center.

It's been a couple of weeks since I've been on and I realized I missed this group! DS is studying away for finals at a pace never before seen, waking up early and asking his father to make him cappuccinos (ten years in Italy has made DH the master coffee maker in the family!)...which led to a funny conversation about caffeine vs. alcohol/drug addiction. On the flip side, DS is suddenly wondering if sciences is where it's at and maybe he should think about majoring in something else...looks like i'll need to add a few columns on my college summary spreadsheet! Anybody else have a child struggling between natural sciences and history/int'l rel?!

St. Louis U--maybe, we've spent a lot of time in St. Louis, love the area, doubt they will want to be in town like that but something to consider. We've visited Creighton-parents love it for the kids, kids not so much. They liked the campus but not the location. We may visit there again since it was the first school they looked at 'officially' and their opinion may change, who knows?

Loving the first weekend of summer! House is somewhat clean, smallest son has two friends here who 'slept over', S14 is still sleeping, D13 preparing for a grad party, and I'm considering what to clean before Euro games start and I need to prep for Fathers Day dinner. I could get used to this! I need to settle on college talk times with D though as you guys are smart- better to be planning these weekly than trying to chase her around the house to talk to her as she runs from me. What day are you all doing your 'chats'? She needs to go get a transcript and school profile before the offices close for summer visits, I know. What are your other main topics?

We need to set up weekly college talks, too. How long are your chats? What kinds of things do you discuss? Our D has a "jump start" class the week before school starts, which will culminate in completing her first application. But - since she is taking the ACT for the last time in September is it better to wait until that score is received before sending? With her prep class I really hope she will better her score by a couple of points. We have not sent any scores to any schools yet. We won't send her first choice until we know that score because they send acceptance letters within a couple of weeks, and merit scholarships within a month after that. I don't want their decision on merit aid made prior to last scores received, in case the September score is higher.

Good news - we received a letter from Mizzou inviting D to their Scholars Day for potential Honors College, and we are able to fit that visit into our summer schedule! Yippee! That was one school we hadn't visited yet. I mentioned Honors College to her and she wasn't interested...but the school sends a letter, and boom! Sounds good. But, that is really her back-up choice of school if the school she wants isn't financially do-able. Hope that won't be the case.

I really enjoy seeing what everyone's doing. This group is really great - love the hints, suggestions, encouragement, and so on. It's really helping me, and in turn, our D13 and D17...so thanks!

Btw, we live in St. Louis, and SLU is a well respected Jesuit school. The campus is beautiful, even though it's in the middle of the city. St. Louis is a great town, with lots of things to do - very affordable things to do, too. They give quite a bit of merit scholarships, based on grades and test scores, which is great.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads, granddads, and those who act as fathers (including some mothers!)
