Congrats HL and MyLB! Wonderful news. I am not a patient person so I am finding the waiting very difficult!

Matlac- Have you looked at St. Lawrence? I know they accepted and explained services available for a friend's LD kid.

Thanks to all for the congrats and yes it does feel good. Funny how as soon as an acceptance comes in you get right back on the school's web site and re-explore. Next step is to get a second from. . . anywhere. Two or more = a decision has to be made!! Love those multiple options!!
HL--I love OWU. It ended up being DS#1's runner up after all was said and done. I know he would have been very happy there. My 13'er has applied there too.
Joisymom--hang in there. Fret about a dry turkey next Thursday or something instead.

Anyone else been spooked yet by a "skinny envelope" that just contains some letter on financial aid or logging into their website? Twice now.

Joisymom--honestly, not so much. I'm pretty sure there are *very* few actual rejections at this stage of the game. Most of the EA/ED kids who do not get acceptances will be deferred to the RD pool. (I.e., I think most of the bad news will come with the RD decisions. So we all have that to look forward to!) At this point you can expect a skinny envelope from almost every school your kid applies to--just acknowledging the application, with that login info, the financial aid info, . . .

Heavylidded, that's fantastic! I've already shared this, but my brother-in-law is an OWU alum. He has nothing but positive things to say about OWU. I have a flicker photo stream of our visit, so if you haven't seen the campus in person yet then let me know and I will give you the link. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
@matlac, I looked at Alfred too and it was high on my daughter's list for a long time. The OOS costs, quirky students, and art program also appealed to us. Alfred is mentioned in the guide called The Best Colleges for B Students and mentions LD support, but I really have no idea just how much support that means. There's a forum on CC where you might ask that question and get some more info. on Alfred though: Learning Differences and Challenges - LD, ADHD - College Confidential |

Joisy Mom - YES!!! I was far more freaked out than my daughter, which I think should tell me I'm too invested. I already have an arrhythmia, and the first skinny envelope came from D's top choice.
Now the kids get the mail. I can't handle it.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the parents who posted in this thread. Your comments about your kids and potential schools have been an invaluable help to me! My daughter and I visited many of schools that were suggested here. We never would have heard of them had I not read this thread. Still waiting for October's ACT scores to be released. Once that is done, her applications are complete and we can relax and hopefully see some acceptances. Thanks again!

Reeinaz- YAY!!! How nice to know that your DS is in. Take a long breathe and exhale right now.
Bloomfield- I agree- this has been a very informative and supportive group. Best of luck to your DD.
Thanks for the good OWU vibes. It is nice to hear positive things from somewhere because when the school is mentioned around here most people look quizzically and say "Where?"- it is not well known in our circle.
I was asked about our impressions of Ithaca. I expected to hate the campus and didn't. I am fond of old buildings, but these were interesting enough and the campus is very well maintained. I think I was most impressed with a session we attended regarding undecided majors. I think they are very slick: instead of enrolling as undecided, students at Ithaca may apply to the "exploratory program". The rep explained that they prefer to think of these students as being complex and interested in numerous things as opposed to viewing them as indecisive or unmotivated, which rang true for DD.
They follow these kids and provide extra advising and put some structure around their schedules with career exploration classes, etc with the goal of really helping them narrow down their interests in time to declare a major and finish in 4 years. This is very appealing.
The town is close by with shuttle service and seemed to have all major requirements, though it is certainly not a metropolis. It was WINDY on that hilltop campus and I can imagine that the Winters are tough.
I really liked the size of the school (about 6,000, I think) and really wish that there were more of this size as options. DD still concerned about racial diversity and was a little worried that students seemed very athletic (which she is not) but seemed to like it enough that she applied last week. I am still not seeing it as a great match for her. I wish I could take that program to whatever school she lands at! OWU is looking really good right now!

Very relieved to report screaming happy daughter got first acceptance, OWU! Came just hours after being deferred by UGA, so welcome good news in this house.
Like HeavyLidded, I too have been wishing there were more ~6k student body sizes to choose from (non-Ivy).

So--just to confirm. I'm not allowed to open any big envelopes that come in addressed to DS, right? Like the one I'm looking at from OWU admissions? (That knucklehead doesn't even have school today--he's playing video games at a friend's house. Grrrr. . . )

Lol...MyLB, I stupidly promised my son that I wouldn't open any mail that came from colleges he's applied to. Up until now, I've acted as secretary, apening mail and forwarding important stuff that he needs to take a look at. He still just dumps the mail on the sofa for me to look at when I get home. He told me he doesn't even want to know when the decisions are due to come out.

I really don't think DS would mind--this is more me. I love surprises and feel like he should open this one. (I had his brother put it at the bottom of the mail pile so when I say, "Um. . . I think there's something in there for you" he'll have to dig for a while.) And of course I've decided I'm just going to stress eat until he gets home. I have tea water heating and a piece of pie warming up in the oven. It'll be on to the leftover brownies next. |
