Good morning, all. Hoping that scualum's S did well and that G#'s mother (and any other ailing family members) are improving.

YDS - good luck with the application process! As for staying on top of S2's social life, it's not even clear what good luck would mean there.

showmom - great news about your H!!

I think the idea that some kids really close up when they go off to college because they need to establish boundaries, but become more communicative once some time has passed applies to my S. He has called a couple of times this week, and responded instantly to emails. Both he and my D had long conversations with my H last night. On this Friday morning, I think I'll just count my blessings.

showmom, that's great for your husband! My husband held that exact title for awhile. He enjoyed the position (he quit when we started our own consulting firm). I hope your own job stabilizes at some point!

Whoo hoo, S2 got up for school this morning! I had to take DH to the airport earlier. We left at 4:10 am and I returned at 5:10. I slept until 5:50 and woke up the kids. I fell back asleep, but heard S2's heavy steps and the slam of the door, so I knew they made it off on time. Now I just have to pray that everything goes smoothly until DH returns late Tuesday night.

I ran four miles non-stop this morning. I love this time of year - cool but not cold. The leaves are beginning to turn, too.

~~waving to everyone~~

D15 BBQ burgers during school today. The National FFA Officers visited our school. The cheer squad was paid to feed them all. Easy money AND she got to miss class without being counted absent. Busy couple of weeks for her. Next week, she orders her class ring. They have such great deigns &choices now. Seems like a long time ago since S10 ordered his.

S10 called today. School is crazy busy, lots of homework, and test after test. Even his weekends include some field trips and quizes. I miss him, and I think he might miss home a bit too. I know his sister is missing him quite a bit. I thought this was suppose to get easier.

Football tonight with a tailgate for about 100 people. It's a baked potato bar - not my choice- but seems to be popular. D15 painted the Hoop for tonight's game.

Shopping tomorrow in the city with D15 and my mother.

pVC for those who need it. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Hmmm...potato bar. That used to be a good option when the kids were little. (Not even little, just residing at home!) Haven't done it in a while.

S came home from work just to pick up his laptop to go to an ACM meeting. They're gearing up for this ICPC (programming competition) and he's trying to make the meeting...fighting rush hour traffic...I hope he makes it!

And when I said, "Do you know where you're going?" he had to reopen the laptop to look at the email that had the building & room # in it. Sigh. Just like his father, the boy needs an aide-de-camp.

But I'm glad he's staying involved even though he's not on campus this semester.

Everyone have a good weekend! It's Oktoberfest here. DH & I might go downtown for a beer. Well, he likes beer, I like cream puffs.

Amen, sister - you and your husband sound just like us.

My nephew is applying to colleges. He's first generation to attend college (my brother had a wild youth and managed to fail out of both trade school and community college, and my SIL took the "secretarial" track in hs). Nephew was originally planning to join the military, so after straight A's in 9th and 10th grades, he slipped to B-'s and C's his junior year. Then last summer he decided he wanted to go to college, and wouldn't you know he has his heart set on D's college. He's applying ED. I don't have a good feeling about this... His GC says it's a bit of a reach for him. In fact, he's applying to 4 schools, and brother says she's really only confident he'll be admitted to one of them. I've been giving my brother and sister in law advice on the whole application process (timelines, how to register for SAT and ACT online, explaining the terminology that the son is coming home with from the GC). GC told them he should explain about his drop in grades and previous military aspirations, and when brother called and asked my opinion, I agreed. D's college is really into reaching out to 1st generation kids, so that gives me some hope, but my expectation is that they'll defer him to see his 1st semester grades so they can see if he's really serious and capable of doing the work. Actually I kinda see that as a best case scenario. Hopefully the test scores come back good and the grades go up...

Happy Fall Everyone! (OK, actually I hate to see it coming).

Sorry I totally missed Talk Like a Pirate Day here… my contribution is a variation of mommusic’s:

Why is a Pirate like an inflated price for corn?
… They’re both a buccaneer.

Or

What’s a Pirate’s favorite letter?
… Arrrrr
What’s a Pirate’s favorite state?
… Arrrrkansas.
What’s a Pirate’s favorite kind of socks?
… Arrrrrgyle.
What’s a Pirate’s favorite fast food restaurant?
… Long John Silver’s, of course.

I am NOT posting from an airport this week as I have been sequestered in a conference room all week and have to stay in Cincinnati through the weekend. The good news is that posting from my hotel means that I did not have to fly back to VA for my mother. The MRI showed no major problems and she is back at home taking antibiotics for her leg (possibly for 45+ days). Thanx everyone, the PVC works again! My father sent an email which is how I found out that my mother was in the hospital. I complained to DW about my father, “Is that how he handles this? Does he not know how to communicate?” To which she replied, “So, what you’re saying is that he is a <G#’s last name> male?” My mother has been sending my father to the grocery store. She makes a list in the order that they can be found by aisle # because my dad, who worked for NASA all his life, is fairly dysfunctional on everyday things or as I put it, “You mean he can put a man on the freakin’ moon, but he can’t find a da** box of cereal and a jug of milk?” OK, rant over, it has been a long week. When Neil Armstrong passed away, my brother’s and I did have a little pride in knowing that our father had a part (no matter how small) in his making it to the moon… shameless plug for all those with Math major kids. Did anyone else here use a slide rule as a toy when they were growing up?

Scualum – Sorry that I missed to GMAT PVC for your DS. I hope that all went well!

ML – Sorry that things are up and down with S2, but at least there was some positive news. Have you considered a Clocky? ThinkGeek :: Clocky Robotic Alarm
I have thought of you this week as I am spending it with Maine-ahs.

I’d just smile and go with it.

YDS – We let D1 stalk D2 on FB and told her just to let us know if there is something that we should know (safety, health, dropped out and moved to Tahiti, etc.).

Showmom – Many congrats to ShowH!

Mommusic – Maybe I’ll “see” you downtown tomorrow. I’m thinking about heading down to at least catch the Reds game. It looks like there are some one-fer seats for old guys that don’t have a life.

In college related news, I was anti-social tonight and stayed at the hotel to watch the game on ESPNU. I got to at least see D2, so I know that she still exists. Actually, she did call me on the way to class one day this week and was quite happy and chatty (subject to change at any minute) and said how much she really likes her classes so far. Miracle of miracles, she even sent us pictures of her with her friends at school! We are also starting to talk about Thanksgiving options. By having a late Wednesday afternoon class, it is hardly worth trying to get her home, so she wants to stay at school and have us come to NJ for Thanksgiving. I told DW that I can get a free room in NYC if she wants to go to the Macy’s parade, but she doesn’t think that she wants to get in the crowds. I imagine that we can find a restaurant somewhere near campus that is open for Thanksgiving dinner. We told D2 that she could invite friends who are stuck on campus to join us.

I can't believe that I'm first this morning after “sleeping in.” Feel free to join me at the hotel breakfast buffet for coffee, tea, muffins, scrambled eggs, sausage, yogurt, fruit, waffles, etc., etc., etc.

Let's see what today brings, shall we?

Good morning, all, and especially you, Gsharp. I'm sticking with the yogurt and fruit this morming - can't eat too much before yoga class.

Have a great Saturday.

Good morning everyone...it is starting to feel like autumn here!

GSharp, Happy to hear your mom is out of danger. You are ahead of me in lining up Thanksgiving plans. I did bring out the slow cooker this morning in acknowledgemnt of fall. At least it's on the counter.

Laf, Best wishes to your nephew on the college app process--he is fortunate to have such a wise aunt!

Twinmama, Hope the study abroad comes through--sounds like it has a lot of special meaning. I wish I could have visited D; maybe another opporunity will come along.

psychmomma, Hugggs to you as your S heads back to school.

In COLLEGE news, I am the old lady in my new class! I am kind of digging it, though; the kids are so earnest and helpful. Gives me hope for our future world!

Sending PVCs to all and congrats to showmom's H!

Enjoy the weekend

Morning, my iPeeps. Had my oatmeal already, but I'd love some fruit.

Got plenty of sleep for a change last night, so feeling great.

Congrats on COLLEGE, psych.

Nothing from ds1 in days, and I fear that they've moved on to an Internet-less part of the country without saying bye.

G# - Glad to hear that your mom is back home again. And yes, I grew up with slide rules in the house and can even use one (in a very limited fashion).

Thanks all for the PVC support. DS did well on his GMATs - being a perfectionist, he may be going for it again in a month - so I may be back asking for a full blast.

Here's hoping for a great Fall weekend for all!!
