Good morning! Up early for a 2nd try at the bulk mailing office. I was taking a bulletin for a non-profit (good volunteer that I am) and discovered they closed at 3:00! This was after I braved traffic & rain for 40 minutes to get there at 3:30. Grump. Who ever heard of a post office closing at 3:00?

Anyway, thanks for the coffee!

Otherwise, all is well here. I think S is going to a reception in our stead this weekend...for a local congresswoman's re-election campaign. We can't go, but we gave money, so the host said "Does your son vote? Tell him to come!" Either he will talk politics or be forced to make polite chit-chat (or both) so that will be a good experience for him.

Welcome to glido. I agree with P56 that the unexpected calls are the best.

tx5: LOL on picking locks! Do they also teach safe-cracking at S2's school?

DB: Ugh! sorry to hear about the water heater. I hope the weekend is kinder to you.

lotsofquests: the study abroad in Denmark sounds fascinating. I like a "required culture trip" that includes a week in Prague. Does this include studying the chemistry of hops fermentation? Btw, I admire your New Year's resolution & discipline.

I spoke with S2, who informed me that he is applying for next summer's internships. Without being reminded or nagged! I've seen a tremendous amount of growth & maturity in S2 between sophomore & junior year. He's still a "work in progress," - and I'm sure we'll have more "Adventures on Craigslist" - but I'm thrilled that the bratty freshman & risk-seeking sophomore is settling down & turning into a fine young man.

Sorry, my autocorrect does funny things like replace of with ox. Particularly in the middle of the night. I use Swype on my phone and it really does funny things if i am not careful

Good morning and TGIF.

It's great to read about all the kids calling home.

Have a great weekend.

TGIF everyone!

12rmh18 - Thanks for the recap. And congrats on that fine young man you have in progress!

D called yesterday to tell me how tired she was after watching a 3 year old boy all day Wednesday. This is one of her occasional babysitting jobs, but the mom had to teach that day and his preschool was closed for Yom Kippur so D took the job since she was off that day. She said she earned her $15 per hour that day!

H and I are off for our first weekend get away as empty nesters. My nephew is getting married Sunday in the mountains a couple of hours from here. One of our friends has a lovely home just a few minutes from the wedding sight so H and I took him up on the offer to use the house. My parents and brother are also staying with us. The weather is suppose to be in the 80's all weekend and we are staying until Monday. There is a lake nearby so we will kayak and hike and walk into the nearby town for dinner and drinks. I am really looking forward to a few days away!

Finally, after two weeks, I’m on my way home! I have found it difficult to sit on the plane or walk through the airport though thinking about poor Dimitri.

I have been locked in a conference room all day for 2 weeks, so I’m pretty clueless about what is happening here.

Hero of the Week = DB’s S.

LAF – Belated PVC’s to your D @ Elon. Hopefully things will continue to improve.

DB – So, does the water heater mess up the weekend? I realize it’s too late, but I vote for North Beach with a side trip to Calvert Cliffs and a beer afterward.

Lilmom – S + job + $ + experience = Mom

Lotsofquests – Adding my congrats to your S on the Denmark program.

It’s always nice to have a trade on which to fall back. I always tell everyone that if Computer Science hadn’t worked out I’d have probably had to go into “Breaking and Entering.”

I’m hoping to reach that “fine young man” stage someday. Although, I guess I can forget about the "young" part.

P56 – Congrats to S3 on the learner’s permit. Now he can legally drive you crazy.

Re: the bump, hustle, Macarena, Wobble, etc. – Carry on, you are on your own. Actually at the Oktoberfest last weekend they had some sort of “World’s Largest Chicken Dance.” Not knowing what a Chicken Dance was, I figured it best that I not try to participate.

Re: Decluttering – It takes me a while to get around to such things. This year I threw away my Windows 98 install disks.

Well, our nest is slightly less empty. I am on the way home to see my new 6 month-old beagle. It was either going to the pound to be “put down” or come to our house… guess which option won? It met DW’s criteria in a dog, “one that needs me.” The tentative name is Atticus Finch (the attorney in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” DW’s favorite book / movie). Most likely he is a permanent fixture, but may be temporary until we find him a home depending on how well he and the cat get along. I do not intend to teach it the Hokey Pokey.

In college news (including unexpected call, in glido’s spirit), someone has replaced D2 with a different person. We received more pictures of her and friends this week. She also called and seemed genuinely happy when I talked to her. She called me one night this week for advice on her Computer Science homework… I’m not sure if I was happier that she had it right or that I could actually do it. Of course, she was working on her homework at 11:00PM which is about my bedtime, but I was glad to help (you never know about those 11:00PM text messages). She still had more homework for other classes and was saving her law seminar reading for last since that is “fun.” I did tell her to be sure to read my email about Orlando and get back to me… <chirp> <chirp> <chirp>.

Happy Saturday to all!

Another hot one here in Southern California. S3 had a race "inland" today. He says he didn't do well because his chest hurt. So far this season we have "psyched myself out", too hot, too dry, cramps third mile and now chest hurting. I hope for his sake he has at least one good race this season. Next week's race is close to the beach, so hopefully will be better.

S2 successfully completed his first 2 days of school. He says Sign Language is interesting. The teacher is deaf so the class is all visual and completely quiet. He decided since he is out of the dorms in an apartment he needs to join a club. He tried fencing, but didn't like it. He will try tennis on Monday, and they have free Archery all week so he will try that.

Back to School Night on Thursday was interesting for S3. He has 5 APs. The Physics teacher is crazy, but in a good, excited about Physics, way. It is the first time it has been offered and there are only 15 in the class, so it should be interesting. He is one of the only two non-native speakers in his AP Spanish class, and pretty much the entire presentation was in Spanish, all I really got out of it is that if we want to donate anything we should donate Kleenex. I really like the teacher and hope he can keep up.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!!
