I heard something on the radio today about the winter storm naming idea--Apparently it's the Weather Channel that's doing it (better for ratings, dontcha know) but the National Weather Service is not going along with it. Good for them! |

DB - an excuse to not decorate? Sounds great to me! H and I actually did a bit of shopping today. I hate wandering around not knowing what to buy, but we brought a list of PEOPLE with us, even if we didn't know what to get them and it helped us to focus. Found a few small things, and decided what to get for the pull-a-name swap that H's family does. We happened to get his brother and sister-in-law. We're doing a Stay-cation basket. 3 bottles of wine (red, white and champagne), gift card to a nice restaurant, and movie theater passes.

Good evening, I don't get much time for CC but I wanted to see if anyone else ecperience today's earthquake. Living in KY, quakes are rare. The epicenter was about 45 miles away and 4.3 in intensity.
Looking forward to Thanksgiving. Our turn to host 4 generations of family, expecting about 50 so we are renting tables and chairs and putting furniture in the basement. Thankfully, every one brings food. I will be fixing 2 turkeys and a ham.

Checking in from the hotel in Singapore. It is 5:15 on Sunday evening and about 90 degrees and will continue to be 90 degrees for the duration of the trip. 85 miles above the Equator, am I right?
Hope everyone is doing well |

Veterans Day--honoring my father, uncles, and cousins who have served. (As well as friends and children of friends.) <3
Hmmm...guess <3 doesn't universally produce a heart...

Poured rain all night here with lots of wind. Still raining, I think we're suppose to get two inches today. makes me want to stay inside with a blanket.
I bought our turkey yesterday and worked on the menu a bit last night. We always host since H always works Thursdays, regardless. That way we can spend it together even if there's a chance he might get called out. (which has happened a few times). There will be 10 of us this year. Can you repost ACM's Cranberry compote recipe ?
S10 is getting a quesadilla maker for Christmas. he can make traditional ones, or fill one with scrambled eggs & bacon, or pepperoni & mozarella, etc.
RobD : Glad you picked up a peacoat at Old Navy. I ordered one for my mother in law last night and the price went up to 34.50....still a good buy but my original cheaper order hasn't even shipped yet!

Happy Veteran's Day, iPeeps! Sending out heartfelt thanks to all those who have served and continue to serve our country.
Checkers: you are my inspiration to get planning for the holidays. I would love to get things done early so that I can enjoy the holidays instead of feeling stressed with all the last-minute things that always seem to always pop up. I am a reformed procrastinator.
Mdem: it is so exciting that you are in Singapore! I would love to visit there. I hope you have a wonderful time. Be sure to give us a trip report when you return.
DB: sending you my sympathies on the kitchen remodel. Remodeling is kinda like giving birth: (hopefully) you will be so happy with the finished product that you forget the painful process.
GSharp: we survived S2's 21st birthday without any calls from the hospital or the police, so we're calling it a success.
KYParent: 50 people from 4 generations?! That sounds like SOME Thanksgiving feast!! My hat is off to you for hosting!
P56: your dog's name "Crackhead" makes me laugh every time. It's the gift that keeps on giving. |

Adding my thanks to all the veterans that have served our great country.
Had a nice lunch with S1 and GF yesterday. I kind of felt like it was a drive by, they both had to be in work at 3:30 so didn't get to spend much time but I was so happy to see both of them. Was missing S2 but he'll be here for Thanksgiving so I'm counting down the days until then. Last year, S1 informed me that this year he and the GF would spend Thanksgiving with one family and Christmas with the other. Still haven't heard what they have decided. I think that we are all just avoiding the holidays this year, except for my mother who just wants to know where she'll be sleeping!

I feel as if I'm missing the pre-holiday shopping when I read your posts!
This year, I'm cooking Thanksgiving dinner. We usually drive to my in-laws for the day but S told us he would only be able to spend it ith us if we stayed home. He has to be back to school on Friday for their playoff football game and other events where the band has to play. And he's bringing his roommate with him. D'14 is homesick and has decided to come home instead of going to her friend's home. We are excited that our family will be together.
KYParent, D is quite happy at her school. She landed a research fellowship and is enjoying the challenge. She didn't mention feeling an earthquake! Maybe she was too excited to learn we bought her plane tickets.
Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend!

Good morning all! Rainy here, but we had a lovely Indian summer weekend. DH got on a ladder and swept the leaves off the roof!
Just discovered S #1 is in Chicago for work. Anybody else have trouble keeping track of their grown kids? I think I always tell them when I'm traveling (in case they need to reach me) but do they return the favor? |

Good morning and happy Monday.
Had a great skype with both kids last night. The biggest news is that S is in his 5th semester and has never lost his student ID. Freshman D lost hers on Halloween. So, for once in his life S doesn't feel irresponsible, compared to his sister.
S is also trying to get Wake to grant credit for a course that will be offered by Syracuse during study abroad in the spring. It's called "Examination of Masculinity through James Bond." Only in London, I suppose.
