Signing in here. S1's first day of classes was today. He's been in sports for about 10 days now and did summer school.
Summer reading was The Alchemist and The Color of Water. Alchemist was well liked, Color of Water, not as much.
Also have D1 starting in middle school and S2 in grade school. 3 kids, 3 schools.
Let the adventures begin.

Monday night, we had frehman orientation. I wish the card would've come with a big "don't bother" message for parents with a child already in the school. I already know the cell phone, attendance, tardy, etc. policy. THe presentation was excrutiating.
| Ours is tonight - I'm a skipping it without a second thought. It's really hard to get geared up to go through that school a third time!

| Right there with you! They have student orientation before school starts, which S3 will go to, and back to school night, which we will go to meet his teachers, but I'm not sitting through anything else. Love their school, but I'm really over that part.

First day of school and the schedule is messed up. The kid is not in the classes she signed up for. She went in herself and was told no changes today, fill out a form and "we'll look at it." Ugh. So, an email to the GC, and surprise, no response. He doesn't get back to me tomorrow and Monday, I'll be on his doorstep. No changes means missed instruction while the school figures it out. Not like the kid changed her mind.

The schedule mix up we still laugh about was when my son was in 6th grade - he and two other boys were in the girls chorus (it said "Concert Choir" so we didn't know if was wrong at schedule pick up). The boys had two spend three days with the girls before they were allowed to change to the "men's" chorus.

Our kids simply get their first block assignment to avoid a rush to the GC before school. They get their full schedule the first day. Students that have a problem have to go sit in the guidance office to try to get it fixed. Upperclassman usually figure out a way to get their schedule before school starts. Willing coaches, or favorite teachers have been known to leak schedules.

DS1 goes to new school (private catholic). We received an invitation today for an informal reception hosted by upper classmate’s parents. What should we expect? Is it “welcome to the community” or some sort of fundraiser? What should we wear? Are we expected to bring something?

Talya - You might want to post this question as a 'visitor' under the parents of the class of 2011 (ie rising Sr's). It is a fairly active group and a very responsive bunch. I have an older son who falls into that group. You may find a wider audience and get information from parents who have 'been there/done that' and can tell you what to expect.

Hello! My D1 is a freshman this year and started classes a week and a half ago. She's one of the older kids and will be 15 in September due to starting school in a different district that had a cut off date before her birthday. She was working on her summer reading last minute because of various camps over the summer. She had to read October Sky, Great Expectations, and The Count of Monte Cristo.
I also have a S1 who started middle school and D2 in elementary. Like Dave, three kids, three schools.
I'm hoping over the next few years to learn enough to be confident as all our children move toward college.

Glad to see everyone here and special welcome to the new posters. I didn't find cc until my older child was a HS senior, I wish I had been on earlier.
One down, one to go on the summer reading. School doesn't start until Sept 7, so I am not full out nagging yet.

DD had a smooth start...thankfully! Homework on the first day, of course, and hallelujah, her teachers actually USE their websites to post links to textbooks, assignments, course calendars, etc!!!
Did well on the first book test, and said she thought she had done OK on the essay about all 3 books. Next tests are Monday, so she's reviewing for those this weekend as well. I HATE that the kids take these tests cold...no concept of what's considered important to know...so invalid, from an educational point of view!
I'm intrigued by the wide variety of books our kids have been reading...the choices seem so random!

First time posting under Carmen & Co. Was a member years ago when DS started the college search. He begins his junior year in two weeks @ UST. I had to create a new name as I could not remember my old one, nor do I have access to my old email account.
My DD begins 9th grade on Sept. 7th, and just finished the majority of her summer home work--reading The Iliad, 9 short essay responses, memorizing 15 lines orally & written, and translating 20 lines. DD, Storm, attends a small classical school after home schooling through 7th grade.

Went to Back to School Night a couple of nights ago. Got a real surprise. My son's English teacher gave out summer assignments back in June. A total of 30 kids took the package. He thought if he got 18 or so back, that was a good year.
He got 29! And all those kids will be in the same class!
He told me that he needed to search classes for extra desks.
As for the rest of his classes, most are fairly small. He has two of the same teachers that his brother had the first semester and three the second. Fortunately, they are veteran teachers who know that brothers are different. They are looking forward to having him in class.

Momreads - Having teachers who know your older child is a HUGE advantage at our local HS. Be thankful. It took 2 years for any adult to learn my older child's name (all of the kids knew her,LOL). Ironically, S will not be using that benefit as he will be attending a different school.
