Spets, When did you find out about the Honors college? Our S also got accepted to Clemson, but we haven't heard anything about Calhoun Honors. Did your acceptance letter also mention Calhouns, or did that come in a separate letter? Thanks.
I called the Honors College and they said that they typically mail it out 2 weeks after admission to the university. They also said general criteria to get to them is top 20% of HS class, 1350 or higher SAT: at least 650 each portion.
brilliantmidgit I saw you also got into UGA. I am still pending clemson, accepted at UGA and GATech. Will probably get accepted to clemson as well but leaning to GATech. 1480 SAT with 3.87 uw and 8AP's 5's on all ap tests. HS forgot to send the school profile
My sister goes to Clemson and graduates this spring with a 3.72 She had a great time and will be heading to grad school in the fall. Her roomates are going to law and medical school. so you cn get a very good education there.
Very safe place near the lake. See my dad's post in the other thread Clemson vs USC
for more details. Very strong greek system which has a very strong academic slant. she had madatory library time of 2 hours a night 4 days a week during her freshman year. Had to have a 3.2 to pledge and near that to stay in.
2 guys in my scout troop are there and are on crew (rowing) both love it and are doing well. 3.2+ gp's
FYI the 60/40boys to girls ratio helped my sister to make her choice. Its conservative few drugs but the brew flows freely
Oh re honors she was asked to join honors each semester after her freshman year but turned it down. She managed to take the same courses only difference is honors get to register early....a real plus.
steviesteve007, thanks for that information. I think I had read the things you posted on other sites. I can't imagine why you haven't gotten into Clemson yet, you should probably hear soon. Yeah, I have heard great things about Clemson.
Yes, the 60/40 ratio is a real plus. I don't think that I will do UGa though because of majors: I have architecture in my blood.
Did honors automatically ask her to join, or did she have to apply?
I am worried about honors and I'm not sure my mom will let me go there if I don't get in.
You asked "Did honors automatically ask her to join, or did she have to apply?"
They asked her to apply but if she applied with her gpa where it was it was seen as automatic. Harder to get in then stay in I think. Stay in is around a 3.2 (see the clemson web sitefor details) for her to get in is 3.5?....could be lower but she never made lower.
Arch is tuff. Lots of all nighters per my sister. Suggest you get in honors first and stay in rather than count on getting in later.
When she, my S, went to Clemson (2002) it was 1300 and 3.7 to get in. She had a 3.8 (~93.5) but only a 1280 and did not want to retake.
FinAid said no problem we will give you OOS money if you get the grades...that never happend They gave her 1k as a soph and 1k as a senior and that's it. Senior 1k required a gpa of 3.72 min. So if they say they are going to give you money get it as a freshman. Honors was more honest They said get the grades and you get an invite and they did
Suggest you make a vist, call, requst honors materials etc, show a lot of interest. That may help your case.
FYI she spent a lot of time at UGA on the weekends....but they don't have your major. How bout NC State? In state for you I think but not nearly as pretty as clemson and you have the college dominating the town at Clemson its not the same in Raleigh I don't think. I visited NCState and did not like it but that may be me.
I've pretty much decided on GaTech. Over 4 years the cost is almost 100K less with the Georgia hope scholarship. All I pay for is housing and I already have a couple os small scholarships lined up 500 to 1k to off set that.
Also my sister is very much into the greek scene and says that if you are a guy that is something you need to be in to have a full social life.
I'm not a greek type so another reason C was not at the top of my list. Good school but not a perfect fit.
Good luck if you go I'm sure you will learn much and enjoy more. My sis did.
You're right that visiting the honors office may help my case.
They've given me the OOS money, so that makes me happy enough.
As for NC State, I don't really like their design school. I went to their design camp and really didn't like the campus or the school. I have a lot of friends who are going there so that would be cool, but the school itself just turns me off.
For GAtech, I visited there too and I really didn't care for it much either. It seemed muggy and dreary (perhaps because I visited on a dreary day). Do be aware before you go there, though, that GAtech has been voted for in the top 20 within the past 4 years (by Princeton Review) for both dorms like dungeons and most miserable students. Otherwise, I would love to live in Atlanta. Plus, their arch school is 1st in the south while C's is 2nd. Oh well, my tradeoff.
Yes, I am prepared for arch, when its something that you love, it doesn't hurt as badly. That's the way arch is all around: even when you get out of school. What do you want to major in?
When you say your sister is involved in the greek scene do you mean she goes to the parties or she is in a sorority? I'm not sure if I would do the sorority or not at this point.
Anyway, thanks for your perspective. Good luck to you too.
Got my admit today. They are waiving oos tuition and offering 2k in addition. they value the offer at 45K. My stats are posted above.
Nothing about honors in the package but again it is supposed to come 2 wks after acceptance.
Some slipperly language about other money in the spring of 2007 that could replace the offer. That is a little worrisome but since its a OOS waiver it costs them nothing for me to attend. I still have to pay instate and housing.
Still leaning to GATech. All I pay there is housing/food.
The offer did make me think.....a little. Clemson is probably a lot more fun than tech. M/F at clemson 60/40 M/F at GaTech 97.5/2.5 lol. But who needs girls I've got studing to do...right I'm going to have to think on this a while.
My son also got his Clemson acceptance back in Oct. Based on his stats, he expected to get in Calhoun Honors but never heard. He finally sent an email to the honors college and they told him his application was mistakenly never routed to the honors college for review. He just received his honors college acceptance. Good luck to your son - he should send email to honors college if he thinks he should have made it.
