Current Clemson Student- Any Questions?

I am currently a freshman at Clemson majoring in Economics (Pre-Business now). If you have any questions feel free to ask them here, or over PM if it is more personal.

My background- I am from Louisville, KY and I choose to go to Clemson because of the experience and the scholarships I received. I am a member of the honors college, but I do not live in the dorms. Currently, I am set to graduate in 2010 with a major in econ and minor in finance.

The weather has been really nice. It was a bit too hot for the first few weeks (~90 degrees), but other than that is has been amazing. The past few weeks have been around 60, so that has been nice. I have always liked having seasons, but that quickly subsided when I thought of walking across campus at 10 degrees. We have been in a drought this year, so we haven't even had much rain. The only time I was really uncomfortable was 'camping' outside for BC tickets (you only need to camp to get good tickets). It went below freezing at night, and we didn't bring a tent.

Question

I'm a senior from NH thinking about the school and i wandering how Clemson i socially for out of state kids? Are all the SC kids only with their friends from high school or town? And i also got into Elon and was wondering a few reasons of why to choose Clemson over it.

There is a lot of stuff to do for out of state students, but it is a state school and a lot of students are already in groups. Most of my good friends are from out of state. If you join a fraternity, club, sport, etc you should have no problem meeting people. The SC kids tend to hang out together, but they are friendly to new people. Overall, the campus is very friendly.

I had the awkward experience of having housing somehow mess up my application, and I ended up in the student apartments with three other freshman (One being my requested roommate from home). Even though I haven't had that group of people you know immediately from your hall, I have still been able to meet a large amount of people. I have never felt like and outsider being from out of state, but a lot of people do know each other beforehand and hang out in their high school groups.

Clemson seems to be a very different school from Elon. I have a friend at Elon and he absolutely loves it. I recommend visiting both if you haven''t already and compare the schools firsthand. Although Clemson is a larger school, all of my classes this semester have had 20-30 people, except one class. My larger class had ~100, but the professor was amazing, and the class had a lab section of 20-30 students in addition to the lecture. As far as why to choose Clemson, it has great school spirit, athletics are more than amazing, friendly campus, great teachers, and a beautiful campus. I can see how some people would prefer another school over Clemson based on their tastes, but I don't think anyone would be unhappy at Clemson.

Hi I just had a quick question regarding golf at Clemson. Does the golf course right next to the Clemson campus, The Walker Course, offer any membership plans for Clemson students. Thanks

James

I know the course offers a discounted rate for students, but I am not sure what they do for memberships. Give them a call and I'm sure they could tell you.

Pros- Atmosphere, faculty, students

Cons- Recruiting for what I want to do

I can't think of any other real cons right now. I wish I had joined more groups (I put all my time into trying out for a club sport that only took one freshman because more than a few seniors are doing a 5th year), but that is nothing against the university.

No problem, keep the questions coming.

I thought I would let you all know that I am exploring my options to transfer. I absolutely love everything that is Clemson, but I am not sure where it can place me for the type of banking/investing I want to do. I have recently decided that I would love to do mergers & acquisitions, venture capitalism, consulting, etc. I hadn't even thought of transferring until I came home for break, and there is at least 95% chance that I will be staying. I'm sure that my worries will subside next semester, when I will be spending almost all my time in the Econ. department but I figured I would explore my options now just in case.

Happy Holidays to all of you.

Scholarship notification

Mitch - hope you had a great holiday. Yesterday, my son received his admission notification (engineering) and OOS tuition waiver (35 ACT and 3.94 UGPA). Even with the waiver, it would be much more expensive than Univ of TN since he already has $8K in guaranteed scholarships to go there (in state) and has not yet heard about additional money. Clemson says he will hear more in the spring about merit based scholarships. Do you know how long we should expect to wait. Thanks for your time and best wishes with regard to your personal decision.

P.S. He likes the Clemson campus and feel more but also is not wanting to be in debt.

RJ

I remember getting my scholarship information sometime before April. The National Scholars program is the largest scholarship (full tuition), and most others will be a few thousand dollars each (you can get more than one).

I wouldn't worry about it. You should get one back by the date posted.

esmitty, we applied about a month ago. They are saying you'll know by February but I guess that's just a "no later than" date.
