Does one have to apply for or be accepted to Honors to receive a scholarship to Clemson?

I'm not talking the big full paid one, but maybe a good merit scholarship, to help out with out of state fees.

With some state schools, I would see where it would be necessary to be in an honors program to get your classes scheduled and have smaller class size, or even get housing, but Clemson seems to be small enough and hard enough that one wouldn't need the added stress of an honors program to get these benefits.

^ good question, I was wondering the same thing... the curriculum in DSs chosen major seems rigorous enough without adding honors.

My son is currently a sophomore in the honors college and did receive the OOS tuition waiver scholarship, as well as 2 additional merit scholarships totaling $4K annually. It is my understanding that much of the merit $'s go to honors college students given their academic standing and the desire to attract high caliber students to the school; however needs-based scholarships are available to all. I do know that the academic requirements for the honors college are even higher this year than they were 2 years ago because my daughter will be applying. It only stands to reason that as the quality of the pool increases, the merit scholarships will be harder to get too!

FYI, the ability to register early definitely does help with course options, but also for scheduling, e.g. better chance of avoiding the 8 AM section.

It is possible to receive an OOS waiver and other scholarships without being in the honors college. The students who qualify as usually very qualified but aren't invited to honors due to the specific cutoffs for the honors college. I also believe that you can deny the honors invitation and keep your scholarship.

Still trying to get an answer as to whether you have to APPLY for the Honors College to be eligible for scholarships like the OOS tuition waiver or the others mentioned above, like the $4K additional.

Oh, and the 8 am class is no problem. Son's an early bird. Just want to make sure don't have to wait on prereqs and fall behind in his curriculum.

You don't have to apply to the honors college to be eligible for scholarships. The only requirement is that they apply by December 1st (or 15th, can't remember the date).

I was an early bird too in high school but with the many activities/events going on in college, I'll have to say that my sleeping habits have changed dramatically. Now getting up for a 9 AM class is hard.

If you (or your child) is eligible for Honors, I would seriously consider applying. My S is a sophomore in the Honors College and his experience has been all positive. He finds that being in Honors has great benefits (living in Holmes, better classes/professors, research opportunities, and so forth) but does not add stress in any way.

You do not need to apply to Honors to be considered for merit scholarships but you do need to apply to be considered for National Scholars, the full-ride scholarship.

My son received acceptance last weekend and received OOS tuition waiver (GA), yet has not yet applied to honors. Letter said more merit $ could come later. We'll see...fingers crossed. =)

Wow, we got a card that we had to wait until February 15th to hear about acceptance.

All we have done is send in the application online, sent the test scores, and asked that the high school send the transcript.

Have we skipped a step?

How did you get your acceptance, by checking your account status, or did they send you a letter?

Congratulations, Feedback! Clemson is such a great school, and the OOS tuition waiver is a great scholarship. Keeping good thoughts for y'all for more merit aid coming your way.

Haven't started the honors app, but noticed a note that recs have to be submitted online, one from a teacher and one from a guidance counselor.

How does that work? Do we get them to email us the file so we can attach it, or does Clemson provide a link for them to email it directly?

They will send you a letter when you get accepted. I know of a few students that got accepted mid-december last year even though they were told about the February 15th date (those were people that got nice scholarships to Clemson).

I'm guessing that you will attach the files to your online application? Not sure because I never filled out the application. (Hopefully I'll get in next semester!)

When completing the Honors application, the student supplies the name and email address of the GC and teacher and then they get an email with instructions for uploading their letters.

We're in the same situation as Montegut - transcripts in, scores in, application in, and a postcard saying we'd hear Feb 15. Haven't started on Honors College app - but that will be happening soon.

Then DS found a counselor form that needs to be submitted, but since the postcard said we wouldn't hear until Feb, he hasn't even turned that into the GC yet. He'll be doing that next week.

That counselor form is just a suggested sheet of what information they would like from your guidance counselor, in reality, any transcript/school information/recommendation the counselor sends will be accepted.
