I' am conditionally accepted to SFSU for spring 12' as a transfer with the caveat that I needed to have college level math finished. I took the CLEP for Algebra and the score needed for credit is 50. I scored a 49 LOL! I' am wondering if anybody has any experience with this sort of thing. BTW, I have senior level units (90), a 3.O G.P.A, and a letter of recommendation I will be getting in order to have a full clip of ammo to use in my battle to get credit for this CLEP.

I have heard that a college/university may waive the 6 months CLEP normally requires before a candidate can retest. Do you think SFSU would do this? Missing the passing score by one point is soooo close, so it couldn't hurt to ask.

How about CLEP's College Mathematics exam? Would this qualify as "college level math" at SFSU?

One other consideration would be to ask the registrar if they would accept credit from the DSST Fundamentals of College Algebra (assuming you took and passed that one). They might not recognize the "DSST" part as many still refer to them as "DANTES" exams.

Sorry to hear you missed the target. You could petition it and see if they give you a break, at least you can say you give it the "ol college try" lol. But seriously, if you made the effort to get the college algebra and you fell short, at least you can say you tried.

May I ask how many hours long you studied? If you reviewed the official study guide? What level math classes you took recently/in high school? Do you recall any problems from the test and did any of the questions surprise you?

Thanks, I've been studying to take the college algebra CLEP for the last month or so(Studying incrementally since October), I started with the college mathematics and for the last month I've been reading a college algebra text and following the official study guide pretty hardcore. Any feedback on the test you have would be most appreciated.

Abracadabra1, no one is supposed to give out specifics regarding the test content, so even if they recalled a specific problem from the test, they are not to be discussing or posting it. This is an issue, but it is a code of misconduct that is stated and agreed to by each candidate as they are preparing to take the exam on the computer the day of the test.

I am also not certain why you would be studying college mathematics if you are planning to take the college algebra exam -- yes, there is some algebra within the college mathematics exam, but it is a waste of time and effort to study the rest of the content.

In regards to studying, have you googled the name of the exam (college algebra) and "CLEP" to see if anyone else has posted some suggestions on resource materials? There are some great online resources that I have seen mentioned for the algebra exam.

It is a challenging exam and I commend you for attempting this one. Keep up the work and share how you did once you have completed it.
