The Class of 2009 was just informed that they set a new record for class GPA for the first semester with nearly half the class named to the Dean's List. Good job girls and guys!

Yes they did a great job. To make the Dean's list you need at least a 3.2 average. There are other lists such as Supt. list which I believe takes into account academics, PFE, and military rating. But this is the biggie for academics. They beat the old record by .02 according to the email we got.

emails? You guys get emails too? And listserve & updated websites? No fair!! LOL I'm tellin' ya, its secret squirrel stuff at USMMA. Ohhhh Boss. I'm so sad. Jamz is sick as a dog. Actually went to the doctor today so all should be ok in a few days. I could kick myself for not forcing him to go here. Bronchitis it seems. I am a bad mom.... And the older one got wisdom teeth yanked today. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Weeee.... I got flowers today because it freaked the hubby out when I had an actual down day. I should pull this Scarlet teary eye crap more often to see if I get some more good stuff. So does the Supe's list include all of the above and do your kids get stars for Dean's & ribbons for Supe's?

Yes we got the scoop from Chief Kotch who keeps us in the loop; he gave us the whole scenario on MAP(midyear admin. processing) which consists of PFE, lectures, meetings about the summer training, moving to new rooms etc.
Too bad about the bronchitis...steve has a perpetual sniffly nose and cough but luckily it's not debilitating. It's part of the SFD I mentioned to you.
The kids get gold stars for academics and blue for pfe. Not sure about the ribbons but they are doin' good.

Apparently there is a viral outbreak in the New York/Long Island area- not the flu, however we are seeing a marked increase in upper respiratory track infections, leading to bronchitis, asthma flareups and pneumonias....encourage jamz to drink LOTS and LOTS of fluid (not plain water- too much of that is no good)- gatorade is ok- and if symptoms get worse, get checked out right away (don't wait). We had over 40 patients in our ED waiting room last night (overflow for the 150 that were already registered and being seen!) with enough coughing going on to creat a virtual bacterial fog!

THANKS Navy2010! I will tell him for sure. They've put him on antibiotics and some cough medicine to help clear it. He was coughing his head off when he was here & I should have moved on it. The coughing and sniffling like Boss said, has been going on for ever now. They said it was just in the left lung. He's got a "medical rack-in" but I'd bet money the kid is running around up there. He's never been sick so this is concern to me. I know nuthin' about nuthin' so I gotta ask. Will this weaken the respiratory system making him prone to get this again?

'fraid not- just have to tough it out! It's not the flu- that is heading this way from California, but has not hit NY yet. Still time to get a flu shot if you haven't done so already!

the coughing, from what I have seen, seems to be holding on for about 2 solid weeks- typically, early morning and nights are worse- but starts to abate after that- good cough suppressent (or lozengers) a help. The abx are a good idea to keep things from getting worse.

no way to tell- if they can catch it early enough then no harm done- but some people tend to fall victim to annual cases of bronchitis-not all, but some! The best idea is to get a pneumococcial vaccination (good for 5 years) and an annual flu shot- getting the flu on top of this would be miserable.

I think what is making this particular event so bad is the dry heat- don't know what kind of heating system is at KP, but chances are its dry- so lots of electrolyte fluids are a good idea, sick or not! Also- sleeping on 2 pillows or more (keep head above level of chest) should help too, especially if there is any upperairway congestion. Also- if he can "hang" down over his bed, lets say, (head lower than chest) and have his roommate "cup" his back (cup hands to trap air, then lightly pound over lung area---NOT over kidneys!) that can really help to loosten things up a bit too- we call it "pulmonary toileting"....(when done correctly, it sounds like a horse clopping down a road) ....do that for 2-4 minutes over each lung area as tolerated....when finished, take some really deep breaths and cough....you get some good results with the coughing that follows! Really works in getting those aveoli opened up and secretions mobilized! I am a firm believer in vicks too after a "steamy" shower! (a good smear under the nose and over the chest!) Lastly, if they can sleep with the window cracked open a bit (inch or so) at night it should help quiet things down- the cool air is a help.

There is hope- everyone who's been coughing here since before Christmas is finally stopping!

Navy2010-Do you know how priceless you are!! I just copied & pasted that to Jamz in an instant message. He said as his medical rack-in pass was only good for yesterday, he's not allowed to lie down today. Said he feels like someone hit him with a sledge hammer at the base of his skull. Sucks to be a Plebe but really sucks to be him right now. He's never been sick (knock wood) so we don't know if he's allergic to any meds. I asked him if he itched anywhere. Said no. I can rest about it now. Thanks so much for the hints and tips. He'll be glad to have them for sure. You stay right here for the next four years in case something else pops up. Hey! Did you see our doc on the KP side? You guys should chat. Wonder how old he is. I have a younger sister.

Jamzmom, Oh! I feel for you! But I bet the flowers did help a little, huh? I am afraid that I have been guilty of sending tons of over the counter stuff to our mid~thinking that when you are sick the last place you want to go is the store. So now he has a stash of Theraflu, Alka-Seltzer Plus cold medicine, decongestants, benedryl, etc. At first he took a lot of ribbing for being the company pharmacy, but now people come to him when they feel under the weather. Wait a minute! I just realized I have been baiting viral germs right to him! Oh no!

Seriously, here in this house he acquired quite a resistance to stuff since Dad and I both teach and are therefore exposed to EVERY little thing that comes down the pike. After teaching for a while your immune system gets really good! Consequently, our mid was rarely sick, too, but we did notice in traveling that those out of town bugs can really catch one off guard. Hence the pharmaceuticals. Extending the long reach of momness across the continent. And I can nag via MSN. HMMMMM. Now if only I could figure out how to pinch a cheek long-distance!
