I Made my Decision!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I made my decision, I'm going to be part of the USCGA Class of 2010! It was a really tough decision, but I'm really happy with it. Thanks to everyone who answered my questions and stuff like that, I really appreciate it! Boss and CadetTino especially

!. I'm kind of relieved I finally did it! Any advice for how to prepare myself? Do I have to go out and get low quarters and all that stuff? They told me the packet would be coming out soon, but now I'm all excited and can't wait of course

Woot and congrats! If you look me up on Eagle during swab summer I'll be sure to share all my sea stories about the Academy and CG life in general.

And I'd say no to the leathers but bring as many undergarments (Underwear, V-neck tees, and socks) as you can. Boo to laundry!

Wow great news! Welcome to the CGA family! I'm sure you are relieved and happy at the same time. It's a big decision but I think you will be happy.
My advice would be to have fun(but not too much!), stay in shape, enjoy your family and friends, and check out the various CGA web sites for more information. Have your parents esp. check out the parents site, join the listserv when it becomes available. All are good sources and I'm sure Cadet Tino can jump in with more specific information.
The shoes I know will be provided for you. A good(broken in!!!) pair of sneakers is important. Plenty of unmentionables(as Tino mentioned...lol).
Congratulations again and good luck! I may see you on R-day as I think I will be volunteering with the parents group that day.
BTW you will love the packet. It comes with a great folder and certificate along with tons of information.

Very soon you will see a notice posted for the listserv for the Class of 2010. Your parents can send in an email and they will receive frequent updates on things you will need to know heading into R-day and can ask questions as they come up. It also serves as a support group for the parents(group hugs available) in these exciting but sometimes nervewracking days.

Please refresh my memory. What state do you live in now? Will your family be coming to R-day? There are many events leading up to r-day and your class has its own website, www.cga2010.com

I live in Minnesota. I think my parents will be coming to R-day, but I'm not positive on that one. Do you recommend it? Here's my favorite part so far...my twin brother just told me he would love to apply next year. How cool would that be!!! I'm sure my parents will have some questions, so thanks for the offer. Oh yeah, someone just told me I need a combat boot equivalent for being on the Eagle and the Cutters in the summer. Is this something I need for swab summer?

Congratulations to you and I know how fabulous you're feeling right now. It's West Point's loss and I'll be disappointed not to get the chance to meet you. I'm sure boss will take great care of you, though.

You needn't worry about getting too much stuff. You'll get your boondockers (boots) issued to you along with a plenty of other things. Honestly, walking into your room on R-day is like a mini-Christmas. You've got a veritable mountain of new stuff to sort, fold, label (EVERYTHING has to have your name on it), and properly stow.

A lot of the first two weeks of swab summer, in between trainings, is spent getting your issued clothing. And believe me, except for possibly a cell phone and sunglasses, if they don't give it to you in swab summer you're not going to need it on Eagle. Also, if you need it on Eagle you'll defiantly get it during swab summer.

I’d say ask your parents to come. I know my parents really appreciated having that last moment, and all the other parents around and the informative and busy schedules helps them cope with losing their dd or ds. As far as the Academy is concerned it’s as much for them as it is for you. Trust me though, you’ll still be getting plenty of attention…

As for your brother, I'm sure it would be totally awesome. My twin certainly would never want to come, but all the siblings here love having a family member around. Plus he'll appreciate your car when you're a firstie.

Yes definitely have your parents come to R-day! I wouldn't have missed it for anything! It's a memorable day and at CGA they give you about 15 minutes at the end(more than some of the other academies).

Agree with Tino on the boots. I don't remember anything about needing them. You should however bring a bunch of preaddressed postcards with you that you can use to jot a few lines to your parents and friends during swab summer. You won't have time for much more than that but they are precious to your family.

There are a lot of siblings at the Academy so that's a great idea about your brother.

Soccor, when you get to USCGA look up a Cadet Craig Hymel, he's one of the greatest guys you'll ever meet. He and i got our eagle scout award together, he decided to go to CGA i'm going to USNA.
