Coast Guard Academy cadets assist car crash victims

Two Coast Guard Academy cadets assisted four people who were in an automobile accident in Rhode Island last weekend.

Second Class Cadet (junior) Kyle Kichner, of Spring, Texas, and Second Class Cadet Jason Hill, of North Falmouth, Mass., were traveling through Rhode Island when a small car in front of them took a sharp turn at a high speed and crashed head-on into a guard rail. While Hill called 911 for assistance, Kichner immediately began giving first aid assistance to the occupants of the vehicle.

“We saw the car go head-on to the guard rail pretty fast. Our first instinct was to get to the occupants and make sure they were alright and help them however we could,” said Hill.

While helping the victims out of the crashed car, Kichner noticed one female in the car had suffered a head injury and appeared to be in shock. He tended to her injuries until police and paramedics arrived. Kichner also assisted police once they arrived on the scene by identifying the driver of the vehicle.

“I am so proud of Mr. Kichner and Mr. Hill. Not only did their quick thinking and calm demeanor in a crisis situation help save the lives of the victims of this terrible accident, but their actions exemplified the core values of the Coast Guard and the high standards we strive to instill in all our future officers,” said Capt. Judith Keene, commandant of cadets at the Academy.

“I’m just happy I could use my training to help the community that we serve,” said Kichner.
