One good thing about the Academy is its location near the water...generally it's 5 or more degrees cooler than the rest of the state. Good luck everybody I'll be there in spirit. My family is brining two swabs from out of state to r-day but I won't be able to make it.

The day after

Well, we just got back home. Yesterday was a strange day, an incredible range of emotions. Our good-bye in the morning went much better than the one in the afternoon! Not sure why they think that is a good idea. One dad near us asked his daughter "now, are you sure this is what you want to do?". I am sure my son saw me cringe - no way I was asking that! They all looked miserable. I am sure they will all be fine. Time for me to go write my swab a letter. Best of luck to everyone. Keep in touch.

The Day After

I keep saying the day was fine, up until the final 30 minutes. We didn't ask our Swab that question either, but wondered all the way home what the answer would have been. Even the conversation at the 10 minute goodbye was difficult. Just followed his lead, funny, but that was probably the last time he would be in that position for a while. He was already obsessed with his watch, as he had set the timer for 10 minutes, and left with 4 minutes to spare. Hopefully, today was a better day.

R-day is tough on the parents as well as the kids...the summer is tough too but keep upbeat it will be over quickly and you'll be so proud of your cadet. Hang tough parents!

"good-bye in the morning went much better than the one in the afternoon! Not sure why they think that is a good idea."

I had the same feeling last year.....I think the R-day second good- bye is just why to much. At one point during R-Day I was going to drop off a package someone pointed me into the wrong chase hall door........I got to see the cadre swap relationship in full action. I can recall thinking I do not belong here. When I went to boot camp so many years ago I would not have wanted my parents to be there.

I think most people who have done the boot camp thing would say it gets to be the routine of the day and it is no big deal after the initial shock.
