who knows something about the sports recruit process?? say, a tmeline, and just some general comments?? my son is interested in a letter he got from a coach. (football)

curious how the process works, this is all new to us.

it said to also apply to the academy online, but the application isn't up yet...

my daughter is entering the afa this week, but she is not going on a sports recruit. she did the regular route.

i would appreciate any info you guys could pass on.

Ok first of all don't get overly "impressed" by a coach letter...they go out to a lot of kids...what year is your son? If he's going into senior year, fill out the coach's questionnaire, fill out the application as soon as it comes up. I would strongly advise a campus visit and interview. The process for application is essentially the same...the difference being that the coach can put in a "good word" for him with the admissions office that can help him get an appointment. If he is a "blue chip" type the coach can get him in assuming he meets all other requirements. A lot of athletes end up at the Naval Academy Prep school(NAPS) or one of the civil preps.
Good luck to him and having gone through the AFA process with your daughter you know most of the other aspects of the academy situation.

thank you bossf51... we did the questionnaire, so i guess next is watch for the application online. my son is a senior.

do the coaches primarily look at play tapes or do they get out to visit different schools?? i know some coaches from other colleges have been around campus already this past spring.

The term "blue chip" is generic...my meaning is that the coaches WANT that player on their team as opposed to showing interest. The CGA coaches don't travel to recruit so they rely on film, coaches' recommendations, news clippings, and times/distances/batting average etc. depending on the sport(i.e. stats). Tapes of the first two or three games of the season should be sent to the coach(not highlight films, game films). Then as the season goes on you can send news clips if appropriate as well as any other honors, achievements received. I would send weightlifting numbers if they change significantly during the year. You will get another letter from the football coach requesting game film later in the year. I think my son was requested to send one game DVD from his junior season (after the CGA coach talked to his high school coach) when he sent his application in September, then to send another game DVD from his senior season before the Early Action deadline.
