THE SERIES: Merchant Marine leads 24-12.

LAST YEAR: Senior quarterback Christian George had 312 yards of total offense including a 10-yard touchdown run with 52 seconds left, capping a nine-play, 80 yard drive lifting Coast Guard to a 36-31 win over Merchant Marine as the Bears won the Secretaries’ Cup for the first time since 2003.

LAST WEEK: Merchant Marine was held to 89 yards of total offense in a 40-0 season opening loss to Kean (N.J.) at home on Saturday. Kean had 464 yards of total offense, 249 rushing and 215 passing while the Mariners had just 38 rushing yards on 36 carries.

ROAD WOES VS. MERCHANT MARINE: Coast Guard has not won a road game vs. Merchant Marine since 1996 when the Bears beat the Mariners 23-13 and earned the program’s first berth to the NCAA Playoffs. Coast Guard is 0-5 at Kings Point, N.Y. since that win and the Bears have been outscored 142-48 in those five games.

NEXT WEEK: Coast Guard will host Plymouth State on Parents’ Weekend next Saturday with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. Plymouth State was the only team to beat the Bears during the regular season last season, it was a 38-19 home win for the Panthers.

A 1st-rate beating, on both sides of the ball. The score could have been MUCH worse. I half-imagined the KP mascot thrashing Objee the Bear as well.

Bears need to re-group quickly after a butt-kicking like that if they want to start conference play competitively next week. If they come out as flat as they did today, there is no way they'll win in the NEFC this year.

Congrats to the Mariners on getting back The Cup.
