Defer admission?

Can you defer your admission for a year? I was thinking about taking a gap year between H.S. and college to study abroad and I was wondering if USCGA would let you do it.

You don't have to apply right after high school, you can wait years if you wish.

In fact, you can apply up to the age of 23 (you cannot be 23 on R-day).

But...

You can only apply to the "next years" class. If you are ready to enter with the class of 2013, apply now for a class of 2013 appointment.

If you want to wait a year, go ahead, but don't apply for an appointment until you are ready to accept.

Maybe I'll only take the gap year if I don't get in and maybe studying abroad will put me over the top.

If you're offered a full appointment to the Academy, you can request to defer your appointment for one year. It's unusual to see these requests, but the Director of Admissions will consider them and (if approved) you would receive a conditional appointment to the next class. I believe two such deferrals were offered to applicants in the Class of 2011 and one to the Class of 2012.

if you end up taking any classes for a year if you dont get in, i would highly recommend taking a calculus class (even if you took it in high school) and some physics or engineering ones if possible. Maybe a chemistry one too, i know that doesnt sound to fun but those are the 3 hardest classes most 4/c are struggling in, and for those that didnt get in and waited and took some of them they are doing much better and are alot less stressed out about them.

The only problem I heard about that is that I may lose my status as an incoming freshman and I'd be a transfer, even if it was a couple of classes during a gap year.

What does that mean? There are no transfers.

If you receive an appointment, you'll report on R-Day as a swab (freshman) along with everyone else, regardless of how many college courses you have already taken.

Yeah, I know for all of the academies you can't transfer in, but at civilian schools, someone told me to be careful because some schools, if I have too many CC credits from H.S. and from the gap year, I'll be treated as a transfer and not an undergrad, important for undergrad schollys.
