Chance me?

Hey all-

Well, I'm starting to get quite neurotic. I should be hearing back any day from the Academy with a decision. I was wondering what you guys thought my admission prospects are:

-SAT I (by section): 560M (ew) 690W 690 CR = 1940

-SAT IIs: German w/o Listening: 610; English Lit: 670

-ACT: Didn't take

-APs: 4 on AP English Literature Exam

-IBs: None

-GPA: 88.75 unweighted (whatever that equals on a 4.0 scale...)

-Rank: 16th best public high school in NJ; doesn't calculate class rank

-Other stats: Honors/AP English throughout High School; Honors/AP German

-ECs listed on app: Registered EMT-B, Class-A Firefighter, Firefighter cadet captain; EMS crew chief; Varsity XC, Varsity Indoor/Outdoor track. XC Co-Captain's Award in 2006; XC Captain 2007-2008. Bass Clarinet (8 years), Piano (8 years) Firefighter Rookie of the Year Award in 2007

-Job/Work Experience: Golf course maintenance, 2004-present; Newspaper photographer since 2006-present; I've also worked for a local sports and glamour photographer since 2006.

-Essays (subject and responses): Very strong (I can provide a sample...)

-Teacher Recs: Very strong

-Counselor Rec: Very strong

-Applied on: 20 October

-Hook (if any): Involvement with leadership and nature of extra-curriculars; visited campus on two official tour dates, also interviewed. 1st quarter senior grades very strong.

-State or Country: NJ

-School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Public. School profile in PDF form
below:
http://www.mtsd.k12.nj.us/6459381111...ile_II.pdf.pdf

-Ethnicity: White/Caucasian

-Gender: Male

What do you all think? I told my admissions officer that it's my number one school by far. For what it's worth, I met with him during my second tour, exchanged a few emails, and also met with him for an interview as I said above.

If anything keeps you out, it will be you low Math SAT score and no exposure to Calculus.

I'd be guessing

...but I'd guess you'll be deferred from early decision to compete with the general pool of applicants. Lack of higher math may be an issue since the Academy is so engineering oriented, but you're pretty strong overall, so you may have a shot.

Sigh, well, I guess I'll have to resume camping out by the mailbox come tomorrow and hope for something positive in the mailbox.

This past week I received two large packages on different days, both dated 9 December from the Academy with "admissions information enclosed", but they were merely thanking me for visiting the Academy or offering me a bio about an Academy graduate.

One of the letters ended with, "Imagine yourself an Academy graduate in 5-7 years... This could be you!" Or words to that effect. It was like a sick joke!

In response to Luigi, while I haven't taken Calculus, I am enrolled in Precalc this year... Yes, I know it's not the same thing, but I'm doing the best that I can.

I think I scored over 240 on the PFE. I can't remember exactly what I did as it was nearly two months ago. All of my marks were decent for doing it right after lunch (*barf*).

Also... is it bad that I haven't heard by now? Someone I know from NJ was already admitted almost two weeks ago! All of my materials, etc. have been marked and confirmed received. I interviewed with Lt. Sporer on 12/4, so maybe that could be it?

I received a medical remedial from DODMERB because I am on Accutane for my acne; pending blood samples after I finish my regimen at the end of this month, it says I'll be cleared. Does this have any bearing on admission?

I'm sorry to pepper you all with questions. I'm literally dreaming about the CGA! I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed...

hey, I am from NJ as well and havent heard anything from admissions so dont be too nervous! You're not alone. I personally thought your stats were very good. The math was not to bad I thought, maybe a little low but I think your ECs and job experience were very impressive. Thats just my thought though. Good luck! I hope we both get some news soon!

pjodon.....looks good to me, they would probablly just place you in intro to calc, instead of calc 1 first semester.....which honestly wouldnt be bad cause for those of us that failed calc 1 and have to take it again means we're right up with all the intro to calc-sters. good luck!

Admission is very much a "whole person" decision, and you sound like a very well rounded person. Last year, when my son applied, he didn't get his acceptance until December 21, and then it was conditional on passing his DODMERB physical. So I wouldn't worry. The physical is a separate process that runs at its own SLOW pace, and Accutane shouldn't be an issue.

The Academy is a dream worth waiting for. Keep us updated!!

i think people put too much weight on not having taken calc in high school. i know of a couple people that took precalc senior year and are doing fine in calc 1. also, what the heck is an 89 GPA?
