Coast Guard to the Rescue

http://www.freep.com/voices/editoria...e_20050910.htm

Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad W. Allen replaces Brown on the scene -- after being dispatched there earlier this week as a new special deputy for hurricane recovery in the Department of Homeland Security. Allen managed Coast Guard operations in New York after 9/11, which gives him far more situational experience than Brown ever got setting up emergency services for the Edmond, Okla., city manager's office in the 1970s.

Good one Taffy. The Coast Guard has done itself proud throughout the Katrina disaster. Their quick response was a result of the non-bureucratic nature of the service. Officers are trained to act first and ask questions later. There is not a huge chain of command that needs to be followed. Good luck Adm. Allen!

Boss,

I agree with you. The Coast Guard has proven itself to be an organization that can handle a crisis and the whole country saw some major league heroics. I would guess that could lead to more applicants this year.
