Will # of apps go up with Katrina?

Just musing here (and have to keep the forum ahead of USMMA!), will the number of applications for CGA go up with the outstanding job the CG has done with Katrina???? It would certainly seem to me that it would...

I agree and so does mom of twins in the other thread. The Coast Guard doesn't always get the most publicity but this is right up there with the buzz created by "The Perfect Storm." The CG is a great humanitarian service and any parent would be proud to call their son or daughter a "Coastie." Even you JM!

NUTS! We're tied up again.... I need to get off my tuffet and think up something witty for a new thread in USMMA...... Boss, now you know I have a wee little place in my heart for a certain Coastie Wannabe. GRIN! Time will tell! But, what will I do with my "GO NAVY!" spurts I have from time to time? I'll have to keep them hidden deep down inside! And learn to love orange.......

It would be my guess too that the Coastie's are getting noticed by some of the younger crowds due to their service during this hurricane tragedy. There are many of them that have no idea what the Coast Guard actually does. (cough cough - Joe - cough cough) So it could lead to some increased application activity for those wanting to serve. We can hope that it is the case! GO COASTIE'S!

Nope. It just doesn't sound right..... They need a catch phrase that works. Will work on that and maybe put it as my new thread in USMMA.

I think there are many, many service-oriented high school seniors who will not be interested in the larger military branches as they are likely not interested in long deployments during wartime. I'll bet many parents would not necessarily be very supportive of those choices anyway.

However, if they begin investigating the Coast Guard out of curiousity, they will learn about the amazing education and opportunities. Perhaps it will even lead to research about all of the service academies and we will see another spike in applications as we did after 9/11.

Bossf51:

Think the publicity will definately help the Coast Guard. However, if the Coast Guard wants to get with the new generation, it needs to drop the Latin phrases (Latin is the language of the dead and attorneys). Otherwise its potential candidates will be Semper Cunfusus ( Always confused).

How about new advertising taglines using some of the hurricane film footage:

"Need a pick-me-up? Join the Coast Guard. "

"You've probably seen some of our biggest fans just hanging around."

Aspen! Have you been in the sauce again? I need your full attention on my new slogan campaign for USGA. Now get back to work thinking on it.
"Go big Orange!" ......nope, doesn't work
"Our uniforms beat navy's" ......nope, not that either. Navy guys are just better!
"Coastie go Postie!"....nope, nothing rhymes with Coastie besides toastie.
Sorry Momoftwins. Yours won't work. Only catchy to you landlubbers.
Help me out ya'll! Taffy! Stop watching tv and get back to work on your apps!!

Jamzmom: Have I been in the sauce, AGAIN? My feelings are hurt.

Give me a break. It took the Coast Guard 14 months and $1.7 million to come up with their current "Shield of Freedom" brand.

For a lot less they could have gotten my cutesy: "Coasties are the Mosties" or an elitist: "U.S.Coast Guard, when second best won't do". Or it they wanted to please Bossf51 and retain Latin: "Semper Paratus, Semper Volens" ( Always Ready, Always Willing). Bet they could sell a lot of t-shirts with that motto to the MTV crowd.

Finally, a riddle. What do men and chocolate have in common?

Women like both of them very rich.
