Acceptance rate down to 27%?

Eepies. =/ Anyone else catch this? I'm not liking it... all of my top schools have tightened up on admissions this year and I really don't want to end up at a state university, albeit it'd be a good one.

Let's hope EDII pulls through.

Otherwise, quick question... freshman year, is it conceivable to transfer after your first semester somewhere? Or do most colleges not accept freshman Spring transfers/it's too much of a hassle?

Hopefully the decrease in acceptance rate is due to an increase in the number of "less qualified" applicants, which could be attributed to the increase in recruitment sent out by colleges like Colgate. How are your stats, existentialpony? I'm sure a state university wouldn't be all that bad, but I definitely don't want to go to one either. Good Luck everyone.

Colgate did just get rid of online application fees and the SAT2 requirements, which most likely resulted in far more unqualified candidates.
Lots of people will take a chance applying for a school (even if they know they're a long shot) when it is free and you don't have to take extra tests.

So if you are a qualified candidate relax, chances are probably the same as you expected them to be.

Btw, Colgate probably did that (free app, no SAT2s) to get more applicants, so they can reject more and end up with a lower (ie down to 27%) acceptance rate. It makes them look even more selective than they are.

hahah, you are the first person who has ever made the Hansel connection. Good job! I use this as my nickname all the time and people never get it. I love in zoolander when Hansel is telling his Mt. Vesuvius skiing story, and everyone is like "cool story Hansel" Actually, that whole movie cracks me up.

Did you apply to Colgate? if yes ED, or RD?

Also, acceptance rates are going to go down for almost every college since we're approaching the second peak of the baby boom. More people are applying to college than ever before, and colleges can't take in the same percentage of people.

I heard that either the high school class of 2006 or the high school class of 2007 will be the peak.

Actually the peak has been just extended to 2012 -- and possibly to 2020 because of the enormous immigrant population, especially among Hispanics -- I mention this FWIW

If we think this is bad, Harvard is literally going to have a 1% admission rate in 10 years.

Even though it would suck for a lot of people, a limit on the number of schools you can apply to (see: down with CommonApp) would solve a lot of these problems (ie. people applying and taking up slots at a school they have no desire to go to; I know I did this).
