my colgate visit

went up today, and although hamilton NY is the worst town in America, the college-campus itself is great; you dont feel like ur in hicksville USA, and the people are really cool

can anyone who goes here comment on the social life? it seems pretty frat based, and if this were to get old after a while (which I definitely could see happening) what other things are there to do? give me a typical party scenario

If you think Hamilton is bad, go to Norwich or Sherburne...for the area, Hamilton is niiiiiice.

Not the worst town! Of course, it needs Wegmans but then it'd drive out on the yummy local places like Parkside.

Definitely doesn't get old... at least not for me as there's always, always something to do. It's not necessarily centered around the frats though they do host some of the larger parties on campus but each generally hosts only once per semester. Students are the ones that make things happen because they know that without them, people would go way off-campus. I don't know anyone who goes to Syracuse or Bing every weekend just because they were bored.

A typical Friday night (if I REALLY want to make it that way if I actually drink) is 6:30-7:30 Shabbat dinner @ the Saperstein, then chillin' around, attend any events that are going on like movies or concerts, then going to a party at 10 or 10:30 PM, then hitting up the Jug around 12:30 AM, then maybe going back and socializing some more.... then hittin' the sack. Those who don't drink obviously would skip the Jug and hit the sack or chill around with friends some more and watch lots more movies or play games.

Yup. All cooked by ME. Okay, I lied. I bake the challah and make brownies when I can. Otherwise, there are a couple students who do the grunt work on Friday afternoons.

question: would you say that most people are athletes? i love playing basketball, but only at a recreational, intramural level and im not ultra-competitive...do alot of people just play for fun without being an athletic powerhouse?

Intramurals are very popular at Colgate. The school newspaper even publishes somewhat-lengthy articles about intramural results! As would be the case at most colleges, a lot of the kids who play basketball intramurals are ex-high school varsity athletes, but all are definitely welcome. You can organize a team with your dormmates/friends with the same approach as you.

I think jrpar is right. It seems to me that the environment at Colgate just naturally encourages students to engage in sports and athletic activities in whatever form or level is right for them, as a natural healthy part of life.

So, whether it's intramurals or individual sports or camping, many seem to do it. I was very happy that my D, who was not a competititive athlete in HS joined and is active in a women's club sport and plans to trying outdoors activities this Spring.

I also get no complaints at all about her social life getting boring at Colgate. Now.... if she'd only tell me she's blessed a Friday night challah or bentched at a bagel breakfast as many times as she's sung rowdy, ribald songs with her team mates around a Saturday night gin bucket, I'd really be a happy parent.

But then again, neither did I in college.
