My daughter (from Northern California, class of 119 students) did not get into her first choice school (Yale) and was waitlisted at her second (Brown) and third choice (Amherst) schools. She has narrowed her choices to Colgate & Berkeley, turning down UCLA & UCSB. She wants to be a journalist. She has visited both schools. At this point she is very stressed out. Any thoughts?

It's difficult to think of schools more different in over all experience. I'm usually very supportive of Colgate, but if she's interested in Journalism, I'd have to think that Berkeley would be the place to go. Just looking at the Berkeley Student newspaper vs. The Maroon, the scope seems larger, the size larger, the topics. Isn't there also a Graduate School of Journalism there?

Or is it that she just wants out of Northern California so badly?

Two recommendations on if Colgate prepares you for a career in journalism: Bob Woodruff of ABC and Gloria Borger of Newsweek. And that's just the beginning. What Colgate does is to expose you to all avenues of thought with its core curriculum which is what a journalist needs in order to write about and to assess any subject or topic that may be the source of an article. As for learning the ins & outs of journalism, an internship and/or graduate school will give you those insights into the craft; what Colgate will do is to teach you how to think, the greatest asset a journalist can have.
