2140 SAT good enough?

Is a 2140 on the SAT good enough to get in? I am entering 12th grade and am thinking of early admission. I have not taken any SAT Subject Tests. I have a 3.9 GPA. I have no after school activities, but I have community service such as working at the library. I also have worked as a lab assistant at Stony Brook University.

Do I stand a chance?

What rank does that 3.9 translate into? What is the SAT breakdown? I get the impression that math and verbal (traditional SAT) is a lot more important than the writing section.

I am in a private school and am either the first or second highest rank out of the 40 students in my grade. I actually had over a 4.0 with APs.

My SAT was 740 verbal, 720 math and 680 writing

Do I stand a chance?

Yes -- What are your sports? Also, volunteer work besides library? How many APs? Also, what's your passion?

I don't play sports due to a medical condition. I took 3 APs this year, Calculus, US History and Physics. I know I got a 4 or 5 on US History, a 3 or 4 on the Physics. I bombed the Calculus....I probably got a 2!

I think AP scores matter very little for admission, especially since many would not be received until after decisions were made. I would say you would still have at least a 75% chance ED.

are u kidding? That translates to about a 1427 +/- 1 on the old, which is extremely good. I'd worry more about your lack of ECs

I don't get your point. Before the writing section, Colgate's mid 50% SAT was 1280-1430; so thought that combined with ED, but lack of ECs, would come out with a 75% chance. I think ECs matter less for ED. Do you think the chances would be higher or lower?

I'm not sure where you got the idea that EC don't matter that much for ED. A school of Colgate's size can look at "personality" of the student body they are forming. They need people to fill certain roles on campus. The problem with the OP is that, based on that he wrote, it seems like he does not really add anything to the student body. His SAT scores are above average, but not super high for Colgate. There are people with higher scores who fill the role of "guy with high test scores but nothing else". The lack of EC will kill him.

I know this sounds harsh, but based on the limited information he gave, why should the school commit a spot to him early? There is nothing to make him stand out and make him a "must have" for the school. It should keep that spot and shop around during RD. I say he's less than 75% for ED.

I didn't do as well on the SAT as you did jbullfrog, but I got in RD this year. I'm not a legacy, had one substantial leadership position, and am not an URM. I also didn't play high school sports. My GPA was also similar to yours. You have a very good chance of getting in RD and a great chance of getting in ED. However, that also depends on the competitiveness of next year's applicant pool. Work hard on your essays. One essay is your typical personal statement. The other essay has an oddball topic; It changes every year. If you go back far enough in the archives, you will find the post of someone who works in the Admissions Office. She revealed the 2nd essay topic for the '07 applicants this year.

I don't have any idea what your chances are, but I applied RD to colgate this year, got rejected, and I figured I'd let you know because I had the exact same SAT break down as you. 740 V 720 M 680 W. I was captain of bothmy baseball and soccer teams, and a 3.9 weighted GPA (good for 17 out of like 125), took a grand total of 8 AP's in my 4 years, including a few 5's on the tests, had a 780 on the AP hist SAT 2 and a 680 on the Math 2c, and also was a writer for my student paper. My stats are similar to Mickelrobe's. My SATs were better (including a perfect 800 on the writing), my sports were the same, I had leadership, great community service, a part-time job, student government and great essays (so they told me). I got wait-listed and did not get in. Colgate was clearly a top choice along with two other comparable LACs. I visited three times, called and e-mailed, all to no avail. Colgate attracts the brightest and the most accomplished, multi-dimensional students. While I do think that GPA rules, they are also looking for something extra. Good luck.
