The Colgate Supplemental Essay is:

What would you pursue, design, or accomplish if money were no object?


My question is, can you start your own company, and then sell a product and have the proceeds from that product go to helping someone/something (Unicef for example)?

Money isnt an object to ME when i am making the company, but when I sell the product there is obviously money and the proceeds go to a company.

Is this ok? Or is it not? Does this mean there should be no money in the essay? Or just no money for your portion of it? Thanks for any help

I would think if it doesn't say anything further, then it's up to your interpretation. This doesn't appear to be aimed at being an essay with a 'right' answer.

I think they're probably just trying to get to know you a little better...use your imagination, and tell the truth!!

Run your life the way you want to- if Colgate doesn't like it, then it's their loss and another college's gain to accept someone wonderful and generous like you.

What if the truth gets you rejected?

My application says I want to pursue Chemistry, which I love, but I would actually pursue music if money were no object...the music industry is very low-paying if you are an average musician.

But won't the officers see right through this? They'll think "wow, this kid doesn't follow his dreams".

Any advice on what I should do?

i would write about pursuing music. i think they're just trying to find out more about you, really...

thnx for the advice...I just hope that writing about music won't make the officers think I'm not serious about chemistry.

My alternative would be writning about research and how I would attempt to fund or carry out research that don't get the grant money they deserves. a lot of projects are tossed since they are under funded.

Which should I approach? The music topic is more honest yet the research topic is also honest, but a bit more in-line with my academic interests.

Don't think of it as having a right or wrong answer. The essay is just vehicle to show them who you are. They want to hear something in your voice. Don't over analyze the question.

I wrote that if money were no object, I'd spend the rest of my life traveling all around the world.
Well, if the truth gets me rejected, I'll still be happier than I would be if I had to make up stuff just to get in.

@david365 -- you can make it a not-for-profit organization (like CollegeBoard )

Talk about music. No questions. I have plenty of friends who are majoring in two obscure fields - be it biology and art history or music and economics - do what you want, it's the best way to live.

OP - I think your idea is fine.
They mean if money were not an obstacle to pursuing, designing, or accomplishing that which you want to pursue, design, or accomplish.
