| Dorm Information: Which is the best? What kind of room do I choose? ect.
Hey I was just wondering if anyone knew which freshman dorm is the best and what kind of rooming situation I should be looking for. I don't want to have to share a room with more that one other person, so what are my options? Also, any information on what dorm is best for who would be great; for instance is there a party dorm (Andrews?), one that is really eerily quite, ect.?
Ok and one more thing... Seriously, how good is Colgate at matching roommates up? Should I be looking to pick one out of the few people I know in my class or just let the school do it's thing because they do a good job at it?
Thanks for any help!!

Did you attend April Visit Days? During the housing session, the process for matching up roommates was explained. It sounded like the questionaire they will send out asks a lot of questions, and Res. Life people say they try hard to match up compatible types.
I would imagine that the healthy-living (chemical-free, whatever they call it) might be a little less raucous than other dorms, based on the kind of kid who would make that choice.
We were told that they are demolishing Gate House, the 'worst' freshman dorm, to make a parking lot for the new Ho Center under construction.

That's interesting MADad - there's been rumors for years that Gate House would be demolished, and now it seems it will be.

gate house- no longer forced triples but the worst looking dorm
east- substance free, very quiet, but lacks a social atmosphere
west- nice rooms
curtis- nice building (each floor has a kitchen and a nice lounge), but the rooms suck
stillman- bad interior (needs to be renovated), but the quads and most rooms are really nice
andrews- nice interior and solid rooms

curiosity question-- do any of the dorms have pianos in their lobbies? For the colleges I visited over the past year, I always thought having such pianos was a nice touch.

East has no social atmosphere?? While there may be no booze, my entire social life revolves around East. When I want to party, I step out of my pristine dorm and walk 150 feet.

No, there is no piano in the any of the dorms...However, I am sure if you mentioned that Williams, Cornell or Hamilton had pianos in the dorm you could expect to see Stevie Wonder playing the in the lobby of every dorm sometime soon.

One day 1, they had us trudging up the hill, then down the hill, then up the hill ....tough for us old folks!
Breakfast with the president was enlightening. Lots of questions about security, given the closesness to Va Tech incident. Also lots of questions about the drinking mentality that many associate with Colgate--I thought the president tap danced a bit around the issue.
On the other hand, had a great chat with the woman who presented the financial aid session--plain talk and straight answers.
Daughter ended up choosing Rochester instead--she was not overly impressed.
