Alumni Memorial Scholar

I recently received my acceptance letter from Colgate (it was postmarked Feb. 24), but I applied RD. Aparently I'm an Alumni Memorial Scholar and because of that, I received my letter early? I was wondering if I'm right in assuming this, and was wondering when everyone else will be receiving their letters since I have several friends who also applied to Colgate.

Congratulations batdude! The Alumni Memorial Scholar thing is a really nice honor - I think Colgate awards this to its to top 200 accepted students (there's more on Colgate's website about this).
Colgate is mailing out the bulk of its regular decision letters the last week of March.

Absolutely!!! Congrats!

A classmate of mine last year got her acceptance letter from Colgate two weeks before I got my letter. So yes, it's typical. Most colleges send off early letters to students with some kind of opportunity in hopes of getting to seriously consider that college before you hear from others.

Thanks, but they really didn't have much to worry about in my case, if I can swing it financially, I'm going.

Congratulations. It's a great program, and you should expect to hear from a current AMS soon to answer any questions you may have about the program and Colgate itself.

mattmom, my son was also accepted as an AMS, do you have personal experience with the program? If so, what can you tell us about it?

My child was accepted as one last year but ultimately chose to attend another college. We were very favorably impressed by Colgate's followup, though, both from the admissions department and from current students: gracious letters, pleasant phone calls, detailed planning of the accepted students evens, and so on. It left us with a very positive feeling about the school and the idea of having the $5,000 stipend for travel or special programs was very tempting.

scholar stats

Could those of you who received the Alumni Memorial Scholarship or whose child did post your/their stats please? Do you know if they will notify E.D. II applicants at the time of acceptance, or after the R.D. decisions have been sent out...?

Yeah. Since all of the money they give is based on need, if your efc is above the cost of attendence, you don't get anything. The Alumni Memorial Scholar dealie says that all of your need will be met with grants instead of loans, but if you have no need you don't get anything (which is kind of annoying, they could at least give a tolken scholarship)

They do in a way--they give you the $5,000 stipend to use for summer study or study abroad.

Hello, I was also accepted AMS without aid. I will not be able to attend unless I receive some financial aid. However, I have submitted FAFSA corrections after their early request date in January which may tip the scales in my favor. Does anybody know the proper process for appealing for more (or any) financial aid? I was thinking of a formal letter or phone call to alert them of my desire to attend but the inability of attending if I am not given some form of aid. I would include a request to look over my FAFSA corrections. Congrats to all other AMS acceptees, hope to see you there in the visit days!

Also, stats, for those who ask:

GPA - 3.97UW, 4.34W
SAT I - 1540 (780V 760M)
SAT II - 780 Writing, 750 MathIIC, 750 Biology M
AP's - 8 AP classes total (3's, 4's, and 5's on all exams)

I have taken Linear Algebra and Honors Topics in Calculus at Pomona College and Art History at Pitzer College. I have also taken a physics course at a local community college.

Worked at a speech and debate institute and worked at a Pomona College genetics lab over past two summers.

EC's - Speech and Debate Lincoln-Douglas Debate Captain
Drum Line Front Ensemble Captain
Varsity Tennis #1 Doubles
School Site Council Student Rep
CSF Board Member

Good teacher recs

Good essay, proofread by Pomona College admissions officer and high school counselor of 30 years

I have various awards such as AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Commended Scholar, various debate and drum line awards, etc. (nothing really out of the ordinary)
