are these lawsuits turning you off?

seems like every day my family gets something in the mail from colgate or someone else regarding the status of the fraternities. i really do not like all of this controversy, it sounds like the administration is being very unreasonable. i loved colgate when i visited last march, but it sounds to me like they are trying to change the school for the worse as far as the social scene goes

by the way, if you dont know what the lawsuits are, apparently one of the fraternities is trying to sue the school on grounds of extortion or something? im not sure, someone may have to clarify that. basically, the school is saying "sell your house to us or get expelled"

Just one lawsuit that I know about - DKE vs. Colgate, saying that the school's attempt to own the fraternity house is a land grab. The initial stage of the case went the school's way. A similar case at Hamilton a few years ago failed. There are two articles about this on the Colgate website.

All of the other fraternities worked out a deal with the school administration.

Have you seen this site: www.sa4c.com . It's made by alums, challenging the frat ruling, and criticizing other aspects of Colgate.

You should read the Maroon News, the edition before spring break. A huge cover story on the DKE vs. Colgate case.

Personally, I think DKE is being unreasonable. I can see why some may perceive the administration as trying to monopolize everything on campus and Hamilton. I like the idea of the administration taking on legal responsiblities but allowing the freedom to self-govern so that way the administration can be at fault for whatever happens.

But hey, the Barge is working!

The Barge is awesome.

I can see the admin's side, and usually responsibility is a good thing, but I can also see the nostalgia for fraternity row. Colgate is one of the few remaining schools of its kind, a small LAC with big athletics and big parties, and the admin is trying to tone it down. I think Colgate may be in danger of losing some of its identity and stand-outish-ness.

I don't see why the admin just doesnt leave the frats alone. theres less alcohol poisoning and problems at the frats than in the dorms, but the admin can't control the dorms. by doing this "broad street program" or whatever, the admin is making every student essentially now pay for frat dues by fixing the houses and stuff

no need to fix something that isn't broken, but i guess the frats are now the scape goats

and yeah, these lawsuits are turning me off to the school a little bit, but i dont think im gonna get in anyway

Colgate is the most beautiful campus i've ever been to, and I have a friend who's very happy there. But, i found out last summer that they had a frat that'd been in big trouble for breaking an anti-hazing law, which really turned me off. i think the move to get rid of Greek life is a good one, but we shall see. Anyway, i applied, consider it a match, but don't think I'll attend, since I've already gotten into Brandeis.
