How Stingy are They About the Word Count?

I only ask because mine is currently at 281 words. I'll try to shave off as much as I can, but I don't know that I'll fit under the limit.

Will they actually count the words in my essay to see if I followed the directions to the letter?

I think it's a great essay; I just had to add about three lines to make it more representative of my life as a whole. It's practically air-tight; if I remove any more, the story will actually start losing critical information. I obviously can't do that.

Besides, my college counselor just responded to an email I sent her a few minutes ago with the essay attached. I asked her about this. She said that I should be fine.

I'll be sending it out in the next few minutes.
