Colgate does send some early regular decision acceptances to AMS (Alumni Memorial Scholars) winners, starting around the end of February. Not sure if the two students you are referring to above are AMS or not.
It stands for Alumni Memorial Scholarship, basically a grant that you can use to fund your own research of something that interests you. My guess is that most RD letters will go out at the end of next month.
I got my acceptance today, too, also for AMS. Does anyone know if there are other benefits to being one of these besides money for summer research? The school gave me no financial aid (long story, but basically because of my mom remarrying it looks like we have a ton of money when actually none of it will go toward my or my brother's college education), so I was kind of hoping that some money came with this distinction.
